Who discovered the city of ottawa?

Rachel S
Lieutenant Colonel John By, who gave his name to Ottawa's earlier incarnation, Bytown, is often credited as Ottawa's founder although the settlement predates him. He was responsible for the construction of the Rideau Canal, built between 1826 and 1832 to allow Canadian boats to travel between Montreal and Kingston at a safe distance from the sometimes hostile United States. Queen Victoria's decision in 1857 to make this former sleepy lumber town the permanent capital was largely based on this geography. It was also a classic Canadian compromise between competing claims to the capital by larger cities. After Confederation in 1867, Ottawa took on the role of federal capital

In the early 1800 Philemon Wright left Massachussetts and with many family members and friends decided that the forests in the area would be a great economic asset. He stayed and named the area Wright (Ottawa -Hull). Since the Ottawa River (Ottawa for the local indians) was a logging highway that would bring cut timber floating to (Hull) Wright, this river dead end, because of the Chaudière Falls, would be perfect to establish a mill. This mill would later become The EB Eddy Company. Other mills would start in close by areas. The James Maclaren Mill in Masson and Thurso Pulp and Paper MillI to name a few. It was also the beginning of Hull (Wrightville) and later of Ottawa (Bytown). With the forestry industry he started came French Canadians and Irish lumberjacks and to accomodate them hotels, bars, stores etc. Life started on both sides of the Ottawa River and to attract workers little houses and land given. These houses were called (Allumette Houses, maisons allumettes in french) some are still around today. In 1826 to 1832 the British under Colonel John By decided to build a canal for ships from what would become (Carleton-Wright) Bytown then Ottawa all the way to Kingston to protect the colony against the Americans . Later the City called Bytown would become Ottawa 1856-7. The entire area is based on Philemon Wright coming from the US as a settler.

No one discovered it, it was founded and built. Earlier civilizations, i.e. First Nations, had used the Ottawa site prior to the arrival of British and French colonists

Lieu. Provo William Parry Wallis
Samuel de Champlain was the first European to travel to the site where Ottawa is now. That's why his statue is in Major Hill's Park.

Um, Andrea..

You're old enough to 'fly'.. but you don't know the 'Capital' of Canada..

WHO filled out your passport for you?

Sheesh!

I often hear First Nations, and of course here's a new one: It's a fact I can back up, too.
The Indian tribes were indeed 1st here, by WAY before the French settled here, the Vikings and Icelanders did in fact, discover it.
I know, I'm a direct descent living here, and it's part of my heritage. It's even documented in one of those "Heritage Moments" you see on CTV or CBC Canada.

I'll be back (said the Icelandenator lol)...

Winston Smith loved Big Brother
It was not discovered, it was founded.
