My sister went from Toronto all the way to Hope, BC then she eventually moved to Vancouver. She said there were screaming kids, people staring, some crazy ones, especially drunk ones. She also said it was UNcomfortable. She mentioned about a stop in Calgary, how she said these kind of people were getting on the bus, and to her, it was a nuisance.

I have taken a 1200 mile greyhound bus trip when I was 16 years old; my mother was just dumb enough to think I would be safe! I was scared out of my mind. But I sat next to the bus driver's seat and he kept an eye on things around me so that helped.

Take two things: a small portable squeeze bottle of Febreze and a package of antiseptic wipes; and toilet paper if you have room for it. Yes buses tend to stink like urine for some reason; so minimize the smell and the obvious germ environment as much as you can. Get off at rest stops and breathe as much fresh air as you can; but don't stray out of the range of the security people at the bus stops.

Don't become involved in long conversations with strangers; a pleasant hello and listening is okay; but don't divulge where you are going, and if you do accidentally always say someone will be there to meet you: your spouse; a parent, someone. It doesn't have to be true ... just so they think it is.

take some good food sandwiches, snacks etc. bus stop food is lousy and costs a fortune.
good luck

It's just like a plane ride. You just sit on the bus for x hours until you arrive at your destination. The bus might stop for restroom breaks though, I don't remember too well.

OKay in reading your answers I realize many of these people are answering about their experiences through the Greyhound service in AMERICA...That is totally different from the Grey hound in CANADA and in AUSTRALIA

In canada it is just like a long trip ...the busses are generally clean and their is no long stop over

In the states it was Horrendous I cried to tears.
Their were drunks that got on in NY and the bus driver said nothing !
The washroom was giving off a foul odour . The stop overs were long and they would take you far out to pick up one person to get back where you were an hour ago .
The people were very scary they looked like they came from another class of society ( placing it nicely )
I thought I was going to be mugged. We went from toronto to florida ...we took a plane back it was that bad

IN canada the bus ride is long on the butt but pleasant

My longest trip was 5-6 hours (Montreal to Boston). We had a stop at the border to go through customs.

Going down was not too bad, as it was early morning and the beginning of the trip. Coming back was annoying because I was tired from the long weekend trip, we were arriving late, and the guys on the bus kept singing and telling jokes and laughing while some people (like me) were trying to sleep.

I did not use the bathroom, as this was a bus full of drunk football fans who had a lot of beer and I could just imagine the small cubicle.

But the seats were very comfortable, like first class seats on a plane, and on a "typical" regular Greyhound bus (not a charter for a football game) it would probably be quite pleasant if you bring a book or MP3 player, and the bus makes periodic stops for you to stretch, go to a "clean" bathroom, and get something to eat or drink.

ohhhh its sucks. crammed into a tiny seat with no leg room , a stinky bus toilet, too many stops.

you will regret it.
the seats a very small no leg room people behind you moving the legs all up on your seat. Some of the stops have layovers 3-4 hours and more and not in the safes places. its hard to sleep and this was a trip from middle NC to central fl to 18 hours. nobody i talked to said they liked it but dut to limited trains and money for a airline tickets you got to do what you can.

The buses are very comfortable, tinted windows, with bathrooms and the driver stops often for food or just a stretch break.

I haven't necessarily taken a Greyhound bus before, but in high school I was included on many band trips, which involved traveling from northern California to Seattle, Santa Cruz, and the Bay Area, none of which were non-stop. These trips are boring , but it helps to find things to do to occupy your time like listening to music, reading, sleeping if possible. Depending on how far it is you're traveling, there most likely will be stops in between. I really don't mind them, for I am pretty used to them. Just slug it out, and don't get seated next to any flute players!
