Who were the first europeans to land on Canada?

Show all answers

Cariad
1001 AD: Lief Ericsson explores the coast of Labrador and Newfoundland. Ericsson also may have explored along the coast of Nova Scotia and New England which he called Vineland

The British didnt get here until until about 1490, French until 1497

Some of the answers you are getting are meaning "settled" in Canada rather than "landed"

nellierslmm
The Vikings were the first to land in Canada.

The French (led by Jacques Cartier) were the first to settle in Canada.

Leif Erickson, was a Viking who traveled first to Iceland, then Greenland, and finally to what is reputed to be Martha's Vineyard or Vinland. However, it was more likely the coast of Labrador, where Viking settlements have been discovered by archaeologists. They started trading across the Atlantic around 900 AD and were stopped only by a major climate change that made travel in their ships too hazardous after about 1100AD.

The Vikings, I believe.

... well, it's kind of east europe, but, the Vikings.
