Why Has Canada Become A Weak Country? |
I read in Time Magazine Canada that Canada punches well below its weight on the international stage.
Its armed forces--once among the finest in the world--are now a bit of a joke, with equipment that keeps breaking down.
With a reputation in the 1970s and 1980s for being one of the most generous of donors to the developing world, Canada has become among the stingiest. Additional Details Time Magazine is not biased it is reputable news magazine ans it is fair in their reporting. Also it was Time Magazine Canada. |

as an American, Canadians are in a good position, economically and politically.
they have a great economy, alot of natural resources, a small population, and they dont have much problems with other nations.
only if USA would learn from it's sister, Canada.

Perhaps your government is into something as novel as spending money on it's own taxpaying citizens versus dumping the dollars into unused military hardware used to fight meaningless wars elsewhere. Not a bad concept. |

all i have to say is that currently the american dollar is worth .90 canadian...which is tragic.
i dont know if i necessarily agree with the times article...canada sends troops all across the globe internationally and the only thing that ive heard canada say 'thanks but no thanks' to would have to be sending troops to iraq...which really wasnt a dumb thing on their part anyway |

Back in the 70`s and 80`s we had massive government deficits.Today we spend what we have, and stopped spending are children's future. If we continued to rack up the debt we would not be in a position to help any one. It`s called living within your means, and because we spend less now we will be able to help more in the future.Things had to change we were almost a 1/2 trillion in debt with a country of 30 million people. If we continued on that path,we would have ended up being a poor country requiring aid and not one that can provide it. |

Instead of giving so much to the developing world, we have them come and live here instead. Canada brings in 300,000 people per year, mostly for the 3rd world. Isn't that enough for a country of only 33 million? |

hey its not only the military that suffers, alot of the social infrastructure has been reduced too. We have to live within our means to maintain a balanced budget which we have for the past decade or more after realizing the country's finances were headed for the brink. Others in the G8 are realizing now just how much debt they are running and chickens will come home to roost. Canada is the only G8 with a solid budget.
That said, pound for pound Canada's fighting forces stack up to any in the world. Ask the Taliban who fought our guys a few times straight up and now depend on roadside bombs planted at nite knowing they will be annihlated in direct conflicts. Ask the Germans ... where do you think they got the term "storm trooper" from. Its what the Germans called Canadians at Vimy Ridge, Juno Beach and Paschendale.
I wont pretend or try to educate you on the ability of Canada to stand up for itself whatever the situation. We dont feel the need to be the world's policeman but calling us "weak" and "punching below our weight (which is only 33 million people BTW) its a bit over the top, . |

I see what the problem is!!
You read biased magazines. Stop doing that!
Edit: All news magazines are biased. They just do not appear so to the reader who's own bias is being supported.
My own bias leads me to answer your question with - The Conservative government is destroying Canada one little piece at a time and we are letting them - some are even encouraging them. |

Everyone is going through a rough time right now,but i don't think Canada is weak, our west is blooming. I don't know why they even mention army in the article,is that the measure for the greatest country. We have soldiers all around the world, and unfortunately young people die fighting silly, meaningless wars. I think we should bring all the guys home!
P.S.Canada rocks! |

You call it a weakness. We call it focusing on our communities first.
Canada has an aging population and a declining birthrate, which has resulted in us having to improve and relax our immigration policies to try to promote migration to Canada.
Our military has been ignored over the last decade, and as a result of a lack of spending in that area, we do have very old equipment. We even bought refurbished submarines from England a few years back and one broke down on its way to Canada to be refitted, killing at least one naval officer in an on-board fire.
Since we never start wars and use our military primarily for peacekeeping purposes, that has not been a major problem. However, with our need to enforce our sovereignty in the north and the added demand for security from terrorism, I think you will see a few improvements in that in the upcoming national budgets.
As for Canada being generous on the world stage, we still provide humanitarian aid all over the world. The problem has been in recent times that our help has been abused by certain third-world governments. For example, I heard that food and medecine sent to some African countries for the poor and starving were actually confiscated and used to feed and help that countries military personnel in fighting neighbouring countries and for government endorsed "ethnic cleansing". As a result, the Government of Canada is more careful with its donations, and you find more is actually being done by individuals and non-profit organizations that ever before.
As for Time Magazine not being biased, they are partnered with CNN (the station that brings you the Larry King) and owned by Time Warner. Do you honestly think that all the news magazines and news shows will report every article they publish with no bias in today's society?
All of them like to hype their story and although they may not tell false information, they can certainly make the stories appear to say something different by adding in comments made or leaving out some quotes that were said so the message delivered is more shocking or exciting. |

Canada's very strong economically, educationally, quality of life-wise, health care-wise, peaceful, prosperous, oportunity-wise...
I'd never want to be stuck in the US that would suck - we have way more opportunity here & on average work less, live longer and are healthier.
*To stay strong we need to protect our arctic territory though, because as the planet warms up the north will melt & become the most agriculturally valuable land in the world - we g2 move there & settle it...its use it or lose it! |

It depends how you measure strength / weakness.
Why do they need to spend billions like the UK or US to upgrade their equipment? Are they at war or likely to be at war? They spend their money on education and health instead! While people die waiting for lottery life saving operations in Britain's NHS or suffer from social injustice in the US, Canadians live longer than the average American or Brit and has a better quality of life. The UN voted Canada the best place to live in the world, taking into account quality of life. Surely, this makes Canada strong? |
