Why Toronto's lakeshore area is so underdeveloped and boring?

It is impressive to see that there is nothing by the lake just some old factories, I believe the city should take more advantage of it, I was thinking of living by the lake but it is expensive and there is nothing there

All cities in the world have stuff by their lakes and have a very upscale and nice views

-London has the London eye, and the milenium bridge and tons of stuff
-Chicago has a beach, has the lakeshore drive and the navy pier
-New York, needles to say, has everything by the lake, including the glorious Brooklyn Bridge
-San Francisco has lots of restaurants and shops by the lake
-Montreal has some sort of park and even some areas that freeze in the winter
-Vancouver has the waterfront
-Even Belfast in the UK has stuff by the lake some restaurants and nice places

...And the list could go on, all cities in the world have beautiful stuff by the lake except Toronto, why is that?

falling asleep now..will come back

"It's a reflection of a much bigger problem - Toronto has corrupt small-thinking politicians who have no vision and who have never been outside of this city, yet they think it's a world-class city when in fact it's more like a 2-bit town.

Other examples of Toronto goofiness:
The ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) redesign ran out of money, so they replaced the beautiful glass/crystal of the original design with Aluminum - making it look like a suburban home! Same thing happened with the AGO (Art Gallery of Toronto) - we hire a first-class architect to do the design but don't want to pay for the building, so the design gets compromised.

Toronto politicians haggle about whether or not to keep the small island airport; meanwhile plans to have a proper train link from the major airport that serves 100 times as many people get put on hold. Similarly, political interference halts a subway line running through the heart of the city in favour of building a short line in the suburban areas that hardly ever gets used.

Toronto is very risk-averse. Its own citizens are small-thinking and demand bland, uncontroversial, conventional structures. One of the most original and innovative buildings in Toronto (Ontario College of Art and Design) gets criticized by the majority of the people living here; and the new Opera House is safe, but tremendously bland and boring."

BY THE WAY :that is the point of view of a CANADIAN / Torontonian friend of mine...
Am not from here so I'd better not criticise.....but I personally think that the Ontario College of Art and Design is freakin ugly too lol !!!

It's a shame eh? But I bet as soon as it's been nicely developed it's gonna be more expensive to live downtown.

I agree, Buffalo is much worse. SOme politicans are not too bright.

Harbourfront is nice and has lots of restaurants and things to do. You are right that the rest of the lakeshore going east is ugly and underdeveloped. Going west from Toronto they are in the process of developing it but it will take years and lots of money.

sir_thinks_a_lot
Why bother creating ultra expensive properties while more can be created a little away from lake?

Besides, lake, unlike ocean, stinks during summer!

2eighty8
Because our mayor can't seem to count and budget money properly.
