Undecided

Why are Canadian drivers.....?

so rude?! Well it seems like everyone over there is in a hurry and will run you off the road if they have too. I went over for vacation and found that Miami drivers aren't so bad after all. I saw like 2 cops in the week I was over there so I guess everyone speeds cause there is no cops around.

Seriously, I was almost killed my a truck driver who tried to run me over with his 18 wheeler.

it was pretty scary.

You answered your question.

Not enough police enforcement.

Also, the police mostly only go after speeders. Aggressive driving and other traffic violations are usually over looked, since the goal of the police are to make revenue for their jurisdiction, not making the roads safer.

When I drive on the US interstates I notice how the passing lane is used strictly for passing and then the cars go back to the right lane. Not like that here in Canada. The passing lane here seems to be for people that want to break the speed limit by 20, 30, even 40 km/h. People here use the right lanes for passing as well. The only time a person here is punished for bad driving is when they cause an accident.

I agree with you. I feel like the only person that uses turn signals and lets people merge.

Yeah, and most of the truckers are coming from the US. Go figure, EH?!

yeah...it's true..we can be aggressive drivers. When your driving on the 401 you pretty much have to speed to keep up with everyone else or you'll get creamed. Driving close to the speed limit isn't even a safe option sometimes.

not everybody is a rude driver... if you went to one of the major cities, then they're city drivers... everybody else in the more rural areas are more calm and relaxed... and just because you had one bad experience doesn't mean everybody is like that...

You must have been in a big city. It's usually better in smaller places, one of which I now live in after a lifetime in Toronto and Vancouver. But even here, when I'm driving at the 60k limit on a rural road with no shoulders, in the rain and at dusk when deer are very likely to appear in front of you out of the murk, people pass me so they can do 70 or 80. What the hell is your hurry, folks? The road dead ends in 4 miles.

Sorry, fellow Canadians, but I have to agree with her, we're not so great on the road. Last time I went into Vancouver, I was doing 10 k over the limit on the freeway and people were passing me like I was standing still.

I have especially noticed the difference in driving habits after returning from a long road trip through the US. I needed a tow truck late one night in the middle of nowhere, Montana. As I rode into town in the tow truck, I noticed he was driving the speed limit exactly. I laughed and told him if he was Canadian, he'd be going at least 10 miles an hour faster. Canadians also rarely move over to the left lane when traffic is merging onto the highway from the right, which seems to be universally done in the US if it's at all possible. I passed through Tuba City, Arizona, where the speed limit was 15, yes, 15 MPH, and that's how fast everyone was driving. That would never happen in Canada.

Yeah. I know what you mean. But it's usually truckers who are rude. It's probably because truckers work on the road, and they have a certain time to reach their destination.

I'm assuming that you were in eastern Canada. I'm from the west coast, and to tell you the truth, I was shocked at the rudeness of drivers in Ontario and Quebec. Speed is a huge issue, even on the west coast, but it was the impatience that surprised me when I was back east. When stopped at a red light, the very milli-second that the light turns green, people started honking for you to get going. I'm not sure about Ontario, but in Quebec, the pedestrian doesn't have the right of way, and I was almost hit by a police car on a main street in Montreal, because where I'm from, you HAVE to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The only American highway I've driven on was the I-5 in Washington. I did notice a lot of cops but I thought it was because it was near the border - but it sounds like there are just more cops in the US. The only other major difference I noticed was that there was a lane you were only allowed to drve on for passing, but that seems like a waste of a lane. On our highways the right lane is usually slower anyway, but you're allowed to drive on any lane you want.

That said, the Toronto part of 401 deserves its reputation and stay out of Montreal, they're nuts.

It's because people's real feelings come out when they are behind the wheel of a car. They only care about what they want and don't care about safety or anybody else on the roads.
