I tend to agree with "Bob Dole Jr." rather than the self-aggrandizing, egotistical Canucks that rejected his comments so forcefully. I think that once a nation of tough individualists, Canadians HAVE indeed evolved into a nation of gutless, leftist, wimps who today stand for NOTHING!

Bob Dole Jr. must feel right at home in Mexico, because the corrupt, dishonest and criminal PRI which ruled (and ruined) Mexico for 71 years is so very similar in its crimes, manipulation and corruption to that other insult to democracy which has almost completely ruined the Land of the Hosers: the LIBERAL PARTY OF CANADA!

You know, I think the difference in Canadian and US cultures started ages ago.
The US as a country, has been conflict centered from the start. They got their freedom from Britan by fighting. The root of the whole "right to bear arms" type of thinking.
Then there was the civil war/revolution/abolition/the 60's race riots etc
Every internal conflict pretty much in the US has been solved by folks fighting.
Not so up here in Canada.
We gained our independence from Britan by discussion and diplomacy.....and when it comes to our internal conflicts as a nation...we tend to be diplomatic about the resolution process.....sometimes it takes an agonizingly long time too!
Canada was born from diplomacy, discussion and agreement....whereas the US was born of uprising and fighting and war.
Im absolutely certain that this fundamental fact helped mold our two cultures to be different as they are today.
As far as racism, there are racists up here but its not the same as in the US with blacks and whites.
We didnt have slaves up here. There were many black folks, escaped slaves and freed slaves that made their way up here (some via the underground railroad) because of the fact that they would be mostly left alone.
But there are people everywhere that are bigots. We just dont have that whole black/white struggle and culture of racist thinking like in the south (im so glad for that too because its such a waste!!)

Do your own thinking!
I've got news for the poster above me re. slavery...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Canada (not a great article, but an intro)

Still, admittedly nothing like the US.

Quick answer to your q: because people are nice to us. How often do you see anybody taking up arms against Canada? Or even wanting to? We're also well provided for. It's much easier to be nice when you're more than adequately housed, clothed, fed, educated, etc etc, never mind not merely living in fear.

Yeah right.

Canadians are the same as anyone else.

There certainly was slavery in Canada, there are surviving ads for slave auctions in Halifax. When the United Empire Loyalists arrived after the American Revolution, many of the southern ones brought slaves with them. In spite of the fact that blacks had been promised their freedom for fighting on the British side. When Britain abolished slavery, that applied to Canada too.

But in the main, I agree with Airwicca, Canada was founded on a completely different set of principles, not on a war fearing society. That has translated into a more laidback attitude today. But by the same token, we have our own share of bigots, racists and idiots.

Edit - Biff dear, which of the above 3 classes do you fall into?

I meet my fair share of a-holes every day and I live in Canada.

Ever hear of stereotyping? We Canadians have our stereotypical images of Americans, and Americans have their stereotypical images of us, one being that we are polite. I lived in New Mexico this past winter and found the people there no more nor less "nice" than the people I meet in Canada on a regular basis. That said, however, there is a different atmosphere in Canada and that may affect how people see the world here. For instance, Canadian troops are at the forefront of the battle against the Taliban around Kandahar in Afghanistan. This is the first combat operation that Canadian troops have been involved in since the Korean war! Seeing a military vehicle, a jet fighter, a person in military uniform is a rarity in most parts of the country. Most people never see a handgun except in the holster of a police officer. I don't know how this impacts our attitudes toward other people, but being in the US for some months certainly felt different. But it had nothing to do with politeness; New Mexicans treated us courteously and with genuine friendliness, almost universally.

living in toronto theyre is no canadian culture. Not to be rude but in toronto we sort of identify with where we are from ir where our parents came from. THis makes things unique as we are all immigrants and so do not have time for racism or care for it. However, other than that it is not this really nice city its still a regular western city, if you step on someones shoes you will get a mean look and is its the wrong persons shoes you will get alot more. Also when i go to the US and this is most states i find the ppl are more willing to help you with questions, in torontomost ppl have too many of their own question to care for you.

probably, part of their traditions, education and well morals that's why they are nice. well i can't argue with that because i've met lots of canadians and they are so warm hearted people. and they are not racist like some other people out there.

guitar_gini
a little bit of both, eh?

I am a TOTAL 100% A-HOLE! I actually left Canada and now live in Mexico just because I can't stand the whining, left-wing, bleeding-heart sniveling of most Canadians!

The "liberalism" and LIBERALISM of Canada actually makes me physically sick to my stomach! I was born in Vancouver General!

And I am NOT nice! OK? Its NOT in the blood...........
