You are generalizing a whole nation by looking at the individuals....unlike assimilation - where everyone's differences are lost in a giant melting pot - multiculturalism advocates the idea that maintaining our different cultural identities can enrich us and our communities. If you do not understand another's values, lifestyle, or beliefs, it is much easier to belittle them. And so the seeds of prejudice and intolerance are sown. |

It's That Guy

I have wondered that myself. It's something I notice immediately when I'm up there.
I think first of all it's because Canadians are less crowded. They have more elbow room. The population of California (where I live) but spread out in the 2nd biggest country on earth.
But even in the big cities Canadians are more relaxed, more polite and considerate, so that is only part of it.
I think it's also that the Canadian culture is more British, especially in the eastern half. British culture is just more civil.
Canadians are also more communitarian. In the US we celebrate the 'rugged individual'. Our country has grown up with a sort of 'every man for himself' mentality. Canada is much more 'us' than 'me'.
And then there's politics. Our politicians polarize Americans. The pick issues to set us against each other, and say things that are meant to be provocative. I blame the Republicans for this mostly because polarization along political lines benefits them. This filters down into our culture, as seen in the war of words on R&S between Christians and Atheists, or the various battles over the death penalty, gun control, abortion, the Ten Commandments in courthouses, etc. etc. Nobody wants to resolve these issues, they would rather just continue to fight over them.
In many ways, I think Canadians have learned from our mistakes! |

I agree. Canadians are nicer then americans.
Their nation wasnt founded on Violence.
Its not common there for someone to own a gun.
People there help old ladies cross the road.
They are less the fundelmentlist deep south and irrate republicans.
They are overall smarter
They can speak french.
That is why Canadians are nicer then americans |

As a Canadian raised and living in a border city I've heard that one before.
Above there are some really great answers and multiculturalism, is the best answer I can come with too, we we don't call ourselves "Canadian-French or Canadian-Arab" for example, we call ourselves "French-Canadian or Arab-Canadian"
But one major thing in my opinion was forgotten Canadians in general, stereo type it if you like, don't always take ourselves so seriously that we're not willing to stand back and just laugh at ourselves once in a while.
check out one of my favorite poems,
"I Am Canadian" |

For the most part I gree with lots of folks here.
More breathing space, an "us" mentality... I don't know it's weird. Although trust me, we have no shortage of jerks up here. As with any place, it really depends on the individual.
I come from Alberta, so whenever I travel through the Western States, I see the same friendliness I do here. Prairie folks and Maritimers are the most friendly I think.
But I think the real reason we are nicer has to do with really strong beer and excellent whisky lol ;) |

Thats just a stereotype. America has a much larger population so there is much more crime and all the major news stories come from there. The world never really gets to see the bad side of Canada. |
