Why are Canadians proud of their nation? |
I can see why Americans are -
America is a superpower.
America is the richest nation.
America is the strongest nation.
America is the most technological nation, after Japan.
America is the beacon of freedom.
Most international companies are American - Walmart, Kmart, Microsoft, just to name a few.
America has invented the plane, car, TV, radio, computer, internet, almost everything we use in our everyday lives.
But why are Canadians proud of their nation? What have they contributed to the world besides hockey, which barely anyone plays? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to offend anyone here but I'm just curious. That's all. I just don't see why anyone would be proud of a nation that is weak, economically and military, and hugely dependent on a superpower for financial aid and standards of living. |

Regardless you should be proud, so that proud Canadians can contribute something to their society; thus, moving towards prosperity, peace, and healthy nation.
You don't have to be world power to be proud. |

I'm american myself and your question offends me... Canadians are proud of their nation because they've managed to maintain a standard of living comparable to that of Americans without screwing themselves up in many of the same ways.
I would like to also note that Canada is absolutely NOT dependent on the United States for "financial aid". Canada is our biggest trading partner, we are as dependent on them as they are on us. |

why canadians should be proud......................because they didn't vote for Bush. |

We are proud because we live next-door to the most conceited nation on earth, and we do it with quiet reserve, a sense of humour and a great health-care system.
I would also question the inventions all being invented by Americans! |

first things first. Europe has better technology than the states does. North America is so far behind them its not even funny. The 1st car was build in Germany. If you would think for a bit maybe you would have not written this question. I was wondering have you even been to Cuba, oh wait you government won't let people go from the States to Cuba, is that freedom. Have you ever heard of the Canada arm? What about the wonder bra? Have you ever watched basketball? If you had a brain you would have noticed that a Canadian created the game your country loves so much. Ever eaten a chocolate bar. Okay we did not create chocolate but we did create the first chocolate bar. Lets take a look at the electron microscope, you might know what that is if you have a brain. Do you need a nice shot of insulin, call a Canadian. If you actually looked into history you would notice that a Canadian invented the light-bulb, but Edison took his invention and put a patent on it. (look up Henry Woodward) Ever read a newspaper, well it was a Canadian who created the newsprint. Ever heard of a pacemaker. Did you see the movie superman. Without a Canadian he would never have existed. Oh and one last thing. Ever zipped up your jacket, or your fly? Without a Canadian you would not have been able to do that, you would have wasted hours of your life doing up buttons. So before you ask why are Canadians proud of their country, do some research and get an education |

You may not be trying to offend anyone, but you certainly have done. Your arrogance is offensive.
I'm sure there are must as many multi-national companies based outside of the US - Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Sony, Toshiba.
We don't view military strength as the great achievement that many Americans seem to think it is. We have a standard of living comparable to the US. The US doesn't have a monopoly on "freedom".
What has Canada contributed to the world? Put your arrogance aside and do a little research. We're known around the world as peacekeepers. Many important inventions have come from Canada - insulin, the telephone, the light bulb, Cobalt-60 cancer treatment, Java programming language, and many others. Check out the links below for more.
We are not a weak country. We have a strong economy, and military strength isn't everything. We are not "hugely dependent" on the US for "financial aid and standards of living". We are our own country, we stand up for what we believe in, and for a country with a population of just over 30 million I think we're doing just fine. |

Do some research before insulting a nation
some of you Americans need to realize that the world doesn't stop and start with you.
I would say Canadians would be proud not to be an ignorant American like you,you give your country a bad name |

Before you bathe yourself in a false sense of pride you really ought to get at least some of your facts straight.
America did have the first powered flight, but the car was a German invention, TV was invented in the UK and updated using the CRT invented by an Italian, the first digital computer was created at Manchester University in England, the Internet (Web) was invented by Brit Tim Berners Lee working at CERN in Switzerland... The list goes on.
In addition, America is only hailed as a beacon of freedom in- well - America. It has an almost endless list of human rights abuses recently, including internment without trial that would be unacceptable in almost any civilized nation on Earth.
It is also not the richest per capita nation, nor the mot productive. Both of those go to European countries (England is woefully behind America on this one too).
But maybe the best reason Canadian's have to be proud is that both the UN and world banks consistently rate Canada as having the best quality of life on Earth. What else matters? |

Canadians invented:
The G-suit (what air force pilots wear to keep them from passing out due to G-forces)
Alkaline Long Lasting Battery
Ardox Spiral Nail
Basketball
Blackberry
Canadarm (where would the Space Station be without this?)
Cobalt 60 "Bomb" cancer Treatment
Electric Oven
Electric Wheel Chair
Electronic Microscope
Explosives Vapor Detector
Garbage Bag
Instant Replay (you wouldn't be watching what just happened in your favorite sport without this one)
Insulin, treatment for diabetes
Java programming language
Light Bulb (Canadians sold the patent to Thomas Edison)
Marine Screw Propeller
Pablum (baby cereal)
Pacemaker
Paint Roller
Plexiglas
Poutine
Radio Voice Transmission
Robertson Screw
Ski-doo (snow mobile)
Snow blower
Standard Time
Telephone
Walkie Talkie
Wonderbra
Zipper
You tell me who invented more things that are used most in everyday life.
PS - Our military isn't weak. Canadians won a lot of the major battles in both WWI and WWII. They also fought from the beginning, not supplying both sides and waiting to get hurt before jumping in. |

What have you really, yourself, contributed to the world..? I hate patriots... Especially ignorant ones... Then again I don't think there is such a thing as a non-ignorant patriot, all patriots are ignorant. |

I can't see why Americans are proud of their country.
America is an ignorant superpower, bullying smaller country and starting wars all over the world.
Canada works with other countries, recognizing that we share the planet and everyone is equal.
America WAS the richest nation, built on bad credit. Who knows where it will be in a few years as China cashes in on the trillions of dollars in debt that the US has accumulated.
Canada is making billions selling oil to the US, if I was in power I would bump the price up 50% to make up for all the carbon being put into the atmosphere.
America is the strongest nation who spends trillions fighting wars instead of feeding and providing basic health care to its own citizens. Americans are obese.
Canada believes in supporting its citizens; healthcare, education and other basic necessaties of life. Canadians are fit.
America is the most technological nation, but sends everything to China to be made and then buys it back from them at inflated prices.
Canadians make many of the goods that Americans buy at inflated prices.
America is the beacon of freedom where if you will be locked away in secret jails if you disagree with the government, where prisoners of an illegal war are tortured and left to rot in CIA jails all over the world.
Canada has free speech and doesn't use secret jails.
Henry Ford was Canadian.
Sir George Cayley was British and invented the plane 50 years before the Wright brothers.
Edwin Belin was british and invented the television
The internet was created by the US military
The earliest computer known is the Antikythera Machine, a mechanical device that computed the positions of the astrological signs on any given date, past or future. It was discovered in an ancient shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea and dates to approximately 250 BC. The designer/builder is not known, but because of its similarity to other mechanical devices known to have been designed by Archimedes, it is probably his work.
Better question is why are Americans so ignorant of the rest of the world?
Want to know why I am proud to be Canadian? Because I am not an American, when I travel I proudly wear a Canadian flag so people do not confuse me with an American....just like lots of smart Americans have been doing for years.
The U.S operates in an alternate universe where the universe revolves around it.
Sure the U.S has been the strongest country for a few hundred years, but its all a cycle. Rome was the last major superpower that tried to take over the world through its economic and military might and it failed and god willing so with the US. |

Ever had an infection that you required penicillin for? Thank Canada, or you'd be dead. You, being American, are probably a fan of basketball? Thank a Canadian -- the game was invented here.
Know anyone who has has a bone marrow transplant? Thank a Canada -- Barbara Bain.
Electric stoves were invented by a Canadian.
The Electric light bulb, while you Yanks still believe Edison invented it, was actually invented by a Canadian. Edison BOUGHT the patent from him.
Banting and Best were Canadian medical researchers. Every American with Diabetes can thank them for the discovery of INSULIN.
Do you drive a car? Look down -- the ODOMETER was invented by a Canadian.
Oh, and Alexander Graham Bell? You know, the guy who invented the telephone? Yeah. Canadian.
Wireless radio -- another thing that Edison had his fingers all over... was actually invented by Canadian Reginald Fessenden.
Hey, you're FLYING LOW, dude -- that zipper was invented by a CANADIAN.
Every time your space program does work in space remotely, they use the CANADARM.
Plexiglass -- Canadian invention. Like snowmobiles and snowblowers. Both Canadian inventions.
Ever used an acetylene torch? Every garage and manufacturer has one.... Canadian invention.
Most people will agree that the electron microscope is a pretty important invention -- again, a Canadian is responsible.
Grahame Ferguson, a CANADIAN, along with a couple of partners, invented IMAX.
Oh, yeah... JAVA technology? You know, the thing that EVERY COMPUTER PROGRAMMER ON THE PLANET has used? Canadian.
Know anyone with a pacemaker? From what I understand, a LOT of American middle aged men have them.... a Canadian invention.
Not to mention the concept of Standard Time -- used by the ENTIRE world, the washing machine, and SUPERMAN. All Canadian.
So, no, we don't spend our time dropping bombs on people, invading countries we know nothing about, consuming more than our fair share of the planet's resources or generally ticking off the population of the rest of the world, but we DO, as CANADIANS, have a few things to be proud of.
Oh, and by the way, Canada is the only country in the world that has never, ever, backed down from a fight, never retreated in battle, and never, ever quit a military operation, anywhere, ever. We're just smart enough to stay out of things that are none of our damned business. |

maybe you should do some research and a little bit of thinking, before you ask silly questions,
We are kind, forgiving, we have the crazy Canucks, and hello...the telephone etc. etc. etc. were invented by Canadians, the beacon of freedom?...we don't have any provinces where discrimination is legal, you must not get out much..have you noticed how many American hockey teams there are? We are strong and united when called upon, and did you know William Shatner, Monty Hall, John Candy, Lorne Green, Wayne Gretzky, Jim Carey, Howie Mandel, Michael J Fox, Celine Dion, and many more celebrities, scientists, athletes, authors, artists, heroes of all kinds and walks of life, are Canadian, i also have relatives in the states and i am proud of their individual accomplishments, so regardless of what country you're from shouldn't it be "what can i do for my fellow man" |

wow.. u sound like the typeof american who thinks we have polar bears on our streets and beavers as our pets... maybe we do not see pride in the amount of things we evented or -->destoyed<--, but the way we treat people. we have thousands of immigrants coming from every part of the world into our country, yet somehow we are still one of the most peaceful nations. and honey, did u know that like 80% of the paper u use comes from OUR forests? oh yea, and about the standards of living.. just compare the crime rate, this should say enough... im guessing you live in your own little worl, blindly hating on others just because u think ur the super advanced country, so it makes you king of the world. well, im sorry to break it to you, but open ur eyes and look around, the world does not revolve around the U.S. so stop the dumb hating an ******* respect canada! |

All of the above answers are correct and state the obvious. I just want to say that I agree with them.
-America is a bully and a nation with the illusion of democracy. Apparently brainwashing its citizens to believe they are in the "best" country is the only way to get them to vote for certain political figures that should be running a local soccer league, not a country....
-America has massive debt and is on its way into a recession due to its "War on Terror".
-America is the most hated nation...and I would not say "strongest".
-Canadians, Britan, Austrailia, Europe, etc. all use and refine the same technology Americans do.
-America is NOT a "beacon of freedom". It is a melting pot that does not welcome other cultures and faiths. Just ask a Muslim how they feel about your "free" country...Canada PROMOTES people to keep their culture.
-I wouldn't be so proud of Wal-Mart, which uses cheap crap from China and child labour...Canada also has many international companies, but we specialize in expediting natural resources and not cheap goods.
-Are you kidding me? Canadians discovered insulin, invented the telephone, implemented socialized healthcare (which the U.S. still doesn't have and will never have), and is home to the "father" of RADIO, which you seem to think the U.S. claims as its own...
http://www.cbc.ca/inventions/inventions.html
I could go on....
Canada is simply a more progressive, intelligent, and civilized nation. Period.
This is what I have to say about Canada:
http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al6NejApFyf7N0ZIxt6hJhbAFQx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080316172834AAW1q2k&show=7#profile-info-cqRN74s2aa
Americans are generally less educated, and often ignorant and closed off to the rest of the world. And your question proves my points. I guess that's how your political figures keep you under their spell...
Just because we don't feel like invading an innocent country for its oil, and wasting money on the military while people die, nothing gets accomplished, and families are torn apart, doesn't mean we are "weak". Canada has held back on its trade because we don't want to be tied to the U.S. We are each others trading partner, but we don't want to integrate any more than we already have to. In terms of finance, in terms of miltary support.
And for good reason...do you remember what happened when the U.K jumped on board with the U.S. on their ridiculous war? Want to ask the families of the London bombings what they think about the U.S. now? Also, Canada has stopped terrorist attacks on its own soil and those bound for the U.S. Why can't your "strong" government and military do the same?
Just an honest thought...
I'd better stop making Canda sound so good...all the Americans like you are going to want to move here...
Take care.
Edit: Thank you so much to all the intelligent people who responded to this question. I enjoyed reading your answers. |

What does inventing things have to do with pride? Christians believe that pride is one of the seven deadly sins. Wonder why that is?
1. America invades nations - Grenada, Iraq
2. America is on the cusp of bankruptcy - seen the latest financial report?
3. China considers the American dollar as "junk currency"
4. America imprisons and tortures prisoners of war on Guantanamo Bay - including underage prisoners
5.The television was not invented by an American but a Scot.
Pride is the scourge of civilization and leads to wholesale destruction. |
