Why are there so many asian people living in vancouver bc canada? |
I dont mean to be disrespectful but why Vancouver ? What is it about that city that asians love so much ? Its getting to be a little much when every road you go down you see like 15 chinese signs...........and 4 english ones. And no joke if you step onto a bus and your not asian you will be the odd one out by FAR. Its like they all migrated there in the last 10 years....Honestly im not this rude ignorant person that you would think I would be because of my question....i just dont know who else to ask......and its bothering me...so maybe I am a little ignorant.....but SERIOUSLY people call it HONGCOUVER for a reason...I didnt make that up. So please dont write about how inconsiderate I am...I just want to know why it is that us Canadians have to deal with getting run out of our own city. |

Three reasons I can think of:
1) If you take a plane or boat from China, Korea, Hong Kong, and other asian countries, and you arrive in Canada, the first port you arrive in is Vancouver. Many people who immigrate will often decide to stay in the area where they first arrived.
2) Many of the asian countries border the Pacific and they are used to the climate and culture that is associated with a coastal city. So the first immigrants probably settled there to start businesses that are associated with this (fish market, restaurant, boat repairs, etc). If you come from a warm climate like Vietnam or Japan where there is little snow, would you choose a Canadian city that is under 6 feet of snow for a third of the year?
3) Now that Vancouver does have such a large asian community, immigrants that arrive now are more prone to stay in Vancouver because they have others who speak the same language, cultural resources, etc. Many Asians are very culturally bound, and they will seek out another Asian person before asking an outsider for anything. |

because it is the closest to asia...and it has a major international airport |

Seriously, if you are an immigrant coming from Asia - where are you going to want to live? In an all-white community in the middle of Alberta, or in a diverse city like Vancouver where people speak your language and you can buy the food you like, etc? |

Canada was a very recognized country to Hong Kong since way back. This could partly due to convenient of travelling from Hong Kong to Canada. Back then when the actors and actresses want a get away place, they would pick Canada especially Vancouver mainly because of the fair weather. Chinese believes in this sickness which can cause pain through high and humidity weather. Hence, they want to stay at places like Vancouver where the humidity is much lower. It started off with a lot of of old folks. Slowly people are migrating and now it is just filled with Chinese or shall I say Asians. In fact, the largest population in Vancouver is not from Hong Kong but Vietnamese and Taiwanese.
The other more logical reason is because people are getting richer nowadays. They want their family to have a better live and to stay away from the bad social life from where they originated.
Suprisingly, anywhere you go around Canada be it Vancouver, Toronto or whatever, the Richmond Valleys or HIlls are conquered by Asians. |

Suppose you were coming into Canada from another country, wouldn't you want to live closest to where you came from in case you had to return home. Since B.C. is on one side of the Pacific and Asia on the other, it makes perfect sense, not to mention Asians have been in Vancouver for years so for newly arrived immigrants, Vancouver is a great place to start a new life. |

It's where the boats dock honey. The suburbs aren't any better either, all the signs in Richmond are in Chinese first, English second. A lot of the time when I go somewhere dominately Asian in Vancouver (everywhere) they stare ME down because I am the odd one out. I can't wait to move. |

Mostly Chinese and many others as well.
When Hong Kong went back to China Canada thought they would really cash in and offered citizenship to those displaced or just wanting to leave if they brought so many thousands of dollars with them.
In other words Canada was wanting their money more than them. Many others are from SE Asia and that was because of the Vietnamese war and trying to give the US the finger.
Actually it has been a big help to Canada. |
