Why are there so many more jewish people in the US as opposed to Canada?

what is the reason for the disparity given the fact that both countries have similar immigration patterns?
Additional Details
There is a French population in the US - in Louisiana. I assume that you have heard of Cajuns in New Orleans? Their ancestors were driven from parts of Canada by the English/Canadians and settled in the area when it was still owned by the French. Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!

I do believe there is a slightly higher Jewish population in the USA, and it really has to do with the immigration points of entry for European and Russian Jews a century ago which was Ellis Island, New York.

Excluding New York which was a magnet for Jewish immigration which just so happened to be situated in the USA, the percentage of Jews would be higher in Canada.

Most Canadian Jews are in Toronto and Montreal suburbs, Vancouver, Quebec City, a small population in Winnipeg.

Most Jews are urban dwellers and perhaps any disparity would be 1) Climate and 2) population density and 3) where their family members have already settled.

Not a big difference per a 2007 census:

1.1% Jewish population in Canada
1.7% Jewish in USA

also - The US is currently the most ethnically diverse country in the world, which makes one wonder why there are so many Jewish in Canada then?

theHoundDawg
For your information, members of the Jewish religion comprise 1.16% of the population of Canada and 1.78% of the population of the US.

Canada is the world's FOURTH LARGEST Jewish community, following only Israel, the US, and France.

What in the world do "current immigration patterns" have to do with this question?

Randy B
I would say that per capita we have about the same number as the US. We have about 1.4% of the population that identifies with being Jewish while the US has about 1.7% of their population. The small difference could be a result of anything from climate to religious preference (conversions) to economics to just about anything. I'm also not convinced that Canada and the US have similar immigration patterns. If that was the case then the US would have french States too.

Mathew H
Well first off the United States has more of really EVERYONE than Canada does, so that would definitley offer some explanation.

They do have proportionatley more Jewish people, but I think that has alot more to do with established connections rather than the location. Alot of them (or their parents, or grandparents now) immigrated from Europe after the war. The US (in particular New York and Chicago) has very well established Jewish populations at this time.

I mean... put yourself in their shoes, if you're moving somewhere you'd probably want to have friends and be comfortable right?

Up until WW2, Canada actually had some anti-semetic ministers... if you can believe it. In fact, the guy in charge of immigration under King publicly bragged that not a single Jew immigrated to Canada under his watch.

I'm not saying Canadians are anti-semetic, that would be ridiculous. BUT there were a few boneheads in our history.

That would be my uneducated explanation based on speculation... I could be way off.
