Why are they talking so much about Obama on the TV in Canada? |
I understand he is the new president of the US and all that stuff, but at the end of the day we live in Canada !!! and therefore when I watch the TV I want to see news from Canada, I don't need to know what happens in other places
What about the coalition that is trying to take over Harper's government? they are going to come back from their break and no one is talking about that !! |

Sadly, it is that type of insular, "I-don't-care-what-happens-elsewhere" thinking that leads to self-centred arrogance - something the Americans are often accused of. Don't go there.
Canadian news carries news about Canada; however, as we are one country of many on the planet, events that happen in places like the US have an effect here.
Like it or not, the US government is still a force to be reckoned with and so what happens there will affect us here.
In the meantime, just know that your local and national news is available, too. You only need to look. |

I agree. However, when 70 per cent or more of your cable networks are American your kind of stuck with what is shown on the tube. I would love to see them replaced with canadian stations from across the country. 100 per cent Canadian TV, radio etc. |

Parliment is on hold so there is very little to cover. The Canadian media does not do the repeat the same info over and over but make it sound like something new as well as they do in the states so they actually report curent news. |

What happens in other places directly or indirectly affects us here in Canada. The United States is our biggest trading partner, and the economic policies under George Bush for the last eight years mean that as the United States is going into recession and trade will be down, our economy is going down too as a direct result. Furthermore since the United States intervenes a great deal in the affairs of other countries for better or worse, this affects world peace and stability. Therefore we're hoping a new president of the United States could mean a safer world and more future prosperity for Canada as well, but only time will tell.
Oh yeah the coalition... sigh. Well we need change here in Canada too, but maybe we will get more excited about it if we ever have a leader worth getting exited about? |

The exact reason I am glad I have satellite...................Maybe some coverage on the actual day of inauguration, but until then, I'd rather hear about all the goings on in my own community, province and country. Thats why I've been skipping the National news the past week or so, reading what I want online, and only tuning in on TV when my local comes on at 11:30. |

Because it's history-making that an African-American will finally be President. This is big news everywhere, not just the US or here in Canada. |

If there is ever a potential Canadian leader who will actually care about the people, there will be a lot of media coverage. Until then, it's not going to happen.
BTW: For a while, I though Mike Ignietiff might actually be that potential leader. Until I heard him publicly support Israel's genocide of the Palestian people. |

I agree, the Steven Harper events are of interest and should be, especially to Canadians. (and of some interested to folks from south of the border smart enough to follow current events outside our "sphere")
Perhaps Obama gets the coverage only on nights when Trailer Park Boys and Red-Green aren't on. Heck, if four years he will need a job. Maybe a new trailer park boy? (He may need help finding Canada eh?)
BTW...good idea to keep Harper in office. He's good for Canada. |
