Why are western Canadians so unpatriotic? |
They seem to support US more than Canada and they support Harper and they don't even learn French (I am from Ontario and I know French).
Why do western Canadians not like Canadian traditions? |

Western Canadians are not unpatriotic. We don't live in a part of the country where French is commonly spoken (with the exception of small parts of the West), so why should we learn French?
Of course many Westerners are going to support PM Harper - he's from the West and it's unusual to have a Western Prime Minister. So I guess we're going to take some pride in the fact that the country's leader is from our part of the country.
Canada is a vast country and each region is unique. The history of each region is different, and the traditions of each region are different. Our traditions are different from the Maritimes, Quebec, or Ontario, but that doesn't make them any less Canadian. And it doesn't make us any less Canadian. |

Yes there is people who are unpatriotic, especially in the West Coast because they feel that the East gets all the benefits, the contracts, and so forth. But then there is those in the East who aren't patriotic either. What about Quebec who wanted to become a separate country but still expected to use Canadian passports, money & have people elected?
And yes learning French is a requirement in school. But why isn't it a requirement to learn English in Quebec? |

You like generalizing a lot huh?
I am an Albertan and I am a Canadian! So how does supporting Harper make me unpatriotic? How does not speaking French make me unpatriotic? I happen to hate French. That has nothing to do with being a Canadian.
I love my country as does everyone I know. If you want to talk unpatriotic talk to those in Quebec who want to seperate and ruin our country. That's what I call unpatriotic. Thankfully there are a lot of patriotic Canadians who live there too. |

Being a bit of an *** arent you? I bet I can speak French as well as you can, I would never vote for Harper and as for the crap about supporting the USA and Bush - what are you smoking back there? Or did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby?
The truth is its people like you from Ontario, I assume Toronto? Are what we dont like about Canad. You have no style sense, retro isnt in, that was awhile back |

Are you friggin kidding me? I'm from Vancouver and I think people are so liberal here and not at all conversative (great respect and tolerance for homosexuals, pot smoking, for example). How many Western Canadians have you actually talked to? 2? Most Western Canadians don't learn French because it's simply not used here, hence there is a huge lack of motivation to do so. And not many French speakers move here either, so even less of a motivation. And I don't know what you mean by 'Canadian traditions'. We are a country of immigrants, what is a Canadian tradition? If you mean Christian ones, then I think we're still in the stage of trying to figure out how to blend those with the religious beliefs of the thousands of immigrants who move here every year. Anyway, I really resent your blanket statement. You should know better than to make stereotypical statements like that. |

Western Canadians are very patriotic, although we do sometimes take issue with arrogant Easterners who seem to believe they are the centre of the universe and know what's best for people who live over 2000km away.
Canada is an incredibly diverse country with a wide variety of economic, social and political views. I don't think supporting the PM is unpatriotic at all.
Tell me how you equate being from the west with not liking Canadian traditions? The greatest Canadian tradition of all is TOLERANCE. You don't seem particularly fond of that tradition... |

We aren't unpatriotic...I'm from Alberta and yeah we support the Americans alot more than the rest of Canada....that doesn't mean we are unpatriotic towards Canada....and a lot of people work for American oilfield companies...as for French,...nobody around here speaks it, and thinks it is a waste of money to have french printed on everything. Lets just say the Western people aren't fond of Quebecois at all. |

We do, we just don't agree that Canadian traditions have to include French (Seriously, there are way more Ukrainians over here then French people, but we don't all learn Ukrainian) and Harper was voted in, so some people in the East support him too lol.
Anyways, Western Canada is no unpatriotic, we just show our patriotism in a different way then Eastern Canada. Probably because of a little thing called Western Alienation. |

I'm from Alberta, and we are REQUIRED to take French from grades 1 through to 8. I don't support the US, I don't think anyone I know of does either.
AND all through grades 1-12 I had to stand in the morning for the singing of Oh Canada, probably just like the rest of you.
I think you're definitely making a very broad and close-minded decision on the way you judge the rest of your country. |

I live in Alberta and I like Canada, and I also like the US. There are a lot of nice people there and its sad to hear some Canadians saying bad things about Americans... not the government, but the people themselves. I have a USA / Canada bumper sticker on my car... does that bother you? Are eastern Canadians so ignorant that they hate an entire group of people (Americans) simply because of their nationality?
As for the French ... Quebec is a world away from here. Everything in this country, from coast to coast is in English and French. As soon as you cross into Quebec... EVERYTHING is French. Also, you state that your from Ontario and know French, well that's great but even in Ontario, the majority of people do not know French. |
