Why aren't Americans fascinated by my Canadian souvenirs? |
In my USA apartment, I have a bookshelf full of imported books Canadian history books, poetry books, Antique books, books about Canadian immigrants, wildlife, nature, it's quite a collection, also some vintage paintings.
All this cool Canadian stuff in my place and every visitor never appreciates it, it's very sad. Unusual items are losing value in the market because "the average consumer just doesn't CARE."
This is very utterly sad. It means there is no merit, reward, or American appreciation for ANYTHING no matter what the craftsmanship may be, and as the baby-boomer generation dies off, it'll get more and more and more and more depressing. Additional Details Doesn't this make Canadians very disheartened? The value of something really precious and priceless made and manufactured in Canada becomes worth $0.00 because 99.9% of Americans just DONT CARE! It's painful to me.
Let them by their Britney Spears albums and their Burger King Whoppers, and their Toyotas and Bentleys, eventhough they'll be out of style in less than 5 years. That's all they know. |

I have seen American's crying the blues in just about every forum here about how the world all seems to hate them etc etc etc. If most of them really thought about it they would realize that the world does not HATE them, it PITIES them. They are so self absorbed. They go to any foreign country and their interest is always on their input there or their superior this or that or that they can buy it and take it home - like the London Bridge I mentioned in one of your other posts. There is nothing wrong with loving your own country but if the only way to make yourself loveable is to trash everyone else, there is a problem with a deep root somewhere. That is not loving yourself at all. A psychologist would have a field day! And they will all tell you that you have to love yourself before anyone else can truly love you. I think all the flag waving and breast beating done in the States is a smoke screen that covers up self hate and jealousy. When that fails, well take up arms and blow every one else off the face of the earth. Sounds pretty 1939ish Germany to me.
There are people out there Eric - thinking Americans and there are some of those - who would appreciate your collection of Canadiana. Clearly they are more cerebral than the people you have shown it to so far. Keep looking. They are there. I have met them. :o) And btw the value of your collection is the value YOU put on it, not the value your neighbour puts there. |

No not at all
American culture in itself is not fascinated with any other culture but themselves |

Most Americans don't value Canadian memorabilia because they know very little about Canada, except that it's 'up north' somewhere. They are taught almost nothing about Canada in school, and the US media generally ignores Canada unless there is some horrendous tragedy.
So it isn't really surprising that they don't value your collection. They've heard much more about Harry Potter than they have about Canada!
Does it bother me? Not really. I pride myself on knowing a good bit about American history, and about Mexican history, and about European history. It's fascinating stuff. But that doesn't mean I expect everyone else to learn about Canadian history. That's their loss.
I'm delighted that there are some Americans, such as yourself, who do value history - and don't worry about depreciating values. There are still many people, like you, who ARE interested and who would value what you have, should you decide to put it on the market.
Happy New Year to you.... |

This has nothing to do with Americans specifically.
If you went to visit a friends house in England, and he had all that same type of stuff from his native country, you wouldn't care unless you were interested in that stuff (poetry, etc...) And even then, it wouldn't be the country that it's from that interested you, it would just be that poetry, or immigration, or whatever "it" is just happens to be one of your interests. |

I don't really think most Canadians give a hoot about what Americans think of us. Why let them know the true Canada? We are fine just the way we are. |

I'd say "change your friends" - you move in a circle which has little outside interest. you'll find this everywhere I'm afraid. |

Sorry to break this to you, but the average Canadian cares about popular culture more then history books and paintings too. I didn't say all Canadians, just the average ones. Then again most of our consumer culture comes from the States, and the goods come from China. In the States a man was trampled to death by a heard of people trying to get cheap made in China consumer goods on sale at Wal Mart. So, what do you expect? The good news is not everyone is the same. Some people are still going to be individuals no matter where they live. |

r u surprised ?, I'm not. americans are ignorant, stupid arseholes period. that's why nobody cares about them...they're just consumers to us and not actual people |

Canadians items might not be very valued to us cause we're not Canadians? I wouldn't be fascinated, I rarely amazed by American things sometimes!
Also, the fact that you are bashing on us doesn't help. Britney spears is probably worth paying attention to your poetry. We have books poetry and whatnot here in America. |
