Why can't canadians take a joke/ are so serious?

first off; i am canadian! and this is based on Y/A mostly, but not necessarily

i find canadians take criticism about their country especially hard. even if it's meant in a joking fashion, there will be more than enough canadians to set the record straight (unnecessarily) and give me all the thumbs down they can muster.

in my own hometown, there is a silly column titled "love the way we *****" meant especially to ***** about whatever you want to. if it is a domestic *****, especially in the city itself, you get way more people insulting you for being against (????) than you do people debating with you for legitimate reasons

i have lived in montreal, vancouver, calgary and halifax and i stand firm that canadians in general are awfully sensitive...why?????

every countryman should be able to take some humour. c'mon, making fun of yourself is the best form of humility

I am happy to take a joke about my country. If you can't laugh at yourself, you aren't allowed to laugh at anybody else. And Canadians have always been able to take a good-natured ribbing. Heck, I think the jokes on Simpsons and South Park about Canada are hilarious, but remember, they are made in good fun.
However, as a patriotic Canadian, I do not have to accept ignorant and uninformed jibes and insults about Canada from anybody.
Cross a line with a patriotic American, Irishman, or German, and you get the same attitude.
There is a huge difference between trying to laugh at somebody and laughing with them.

Gypsy
Good grief, Canadians are about the most humorous people in the world. As examples: John Candy, Dan Ackroyd, Mike Meyers, Steve Martin are hilarious in my opinion. And what about the programs "This Hour has 22 Minutes," "Airfarce" "The Mercer Report" all are satirical commentaries. I love Canadian humor and always find that Canadians will readily make jokes about themselves. Lighten up!

I don't know what all the ****** are in your question, and I do not find Canadians overly sensitive about criticism, but would like to add this: If you find we are sensitive maybe we have a heightened sense of patriotism and do not like the country criticized. Anyway, let's agree to disagree, in true Canadian fashion!

thinkingtime
Perhaps you do not recognise subtle humour.

There is a line between funny and intentionally rude, of course.

Most jokes with **** in them come into the rude category for many of us.

Jane Marple
No one takes criticisms about their country. Why should we be different.

ADD: hey! I'm French Canadian...and when I watch Comedy channel and they make fun of us I think it's hilarious!

K B
Maybe it is not our answers that are lacking in a sense of humour but rather, your interpretation. I have also lived in all the cities you have and also in Ottawa and I cannot imagine where you have been hanging out to find all these sensitive, humourless people.

BTW I also love the way some people " *****" " But do you really think it is proper to write about personal things like that on International Internet? Shocking!! Scandalous!! Not at all mannerly!!

What are you talking about? The basis of most of our comedy is making fun of ourselves. Even on yahoo answers we joke around....Personally I don't care becuase I find most of the stereotypes true anyway. And maybe the reason we're a bit sensitive is becuase Americans in particular like to make fun of us alot so.....

Interesting. Did you ever hear of a comedian named Rich Little? His writer, Rick Eustis, was Canadian. And then there's that other comic, Jim Carey - there's a long list of Canadian comics.
But sometimes Canadians just get ticked about the lack of knowledge when it comes to things Canadian. Esp. when Yanks are involved, because they know so little about Canada. You're Canadian, so that doesn't include you, but I'm sure you'll agree with the generalization.

Hi Gypsy we can't claim Steve Martin as one of our own he's from Waco Texas. And Lady Rich Little is from Ottawa-my mom went to school with him. DItto Paul Anka and Lorne Greene.
We could make up a couple of hockey squads with all the funny people who went stateside! We just could not call them the leafs! Those comedians are successful! LOL!
