Why can't every town in Ontario have a French Quarter? |
To strengthen ties with Quebec, why can't Canadians provide a French section of every city and town in Ontario, be it a few Chateaus or something flowery?
And on that section of town, all streets should start with "Rue" so Saint Marys Street becomes "RUE STE MARY" and there should be French wines and cheeses and a bakery and some accordian.
Why can't more be done to make the Francophone influence in Canada more widespread and more incorporated into the whole of Canada?
I guess Winnipeg has Saint Boniface (which is French and Metis). There's French-speaking groups in Alberta.
Ontario needs to work on its French, does it not? |

Here's how it works...
Lebeau Vitres d'auto has to call itself Speedy Auto Glass in English Canada because people would boycott the company if it called itself by its real name.
When they had a French-speaking foreign character in 7-Up ads a while ago, people in Alberta called their TV stations to have it taken off the air. (In Quebec, that character spoke Italian. Not one complaint was registered.)
I read people bitching all the time about the lack of English in Quebec. Funny, I have people speak English to me all the time here -- and I am FRENCH-SPEAKING! Now, I tried speaking French in Toronto a couple of times before... Yeah, like THAT worked! One little old lady even told me to take the first boat back to Quebec.
NOTHING can be done to promote French outside Quebec and parts of New Brunswick. English Canada does not want to have anything more to do with Quebec. So just let us be on our way, stop meddling in our referenda when we have them (like you really, REALLY love us now, don't you?), and we can be decent neighbours instead of getting on each other's nerves inside the same house.
Oh, by the way... All of you who whine about English being "outlawed" in Quebec should have a look at the links below to brush up on your history. The only language whose teaching was ever forbidden in Canadian history is French!
Of course, English Canadian "revisionists" will give me thumbs down instead of coming to terms with this, which just confirms the reason why I chose my name here. |

I currently live just outside North Bay, Ontario, but have lived in many Northern Ontario towns in the last few years. A good many of the street signs are in French already, and almost everyone up here speaks French fluently, lots even as a first language, unless your a transplant, like me. A good deal of the jobs, especially in retail/customer service/social service, require you to be fluently bilingual. We have all Francophone clubs, groups.......Go a little bit further North, and you have to be bilingual, or you have no hopes in getting a job. I think there is a fair amount of French influence in Ontario already, more so than say in Manitoba, as we are right next to Quebec, and it is a nice travel destination. What I would like to see change is people's attitudes toward Quebecois, and them toward Anglophones... |
