Canadian Reality

Why did Canadians elect an illiterate as Prime Minister in the 90's?

I have a few friends from Hong Kong and Japan who spoke better English than that illiterate half-mouth. I was wondering why Canadians would elect an illiterate to the highest office of the land when his English is worst that those who immigrate here like me?

Uhh, it may be because French happens to be an official language, just as English is. I've seen a few politicos mangle the French language as well.
He's far from illiterate.

Canada is bi-lingual country.

The Prime Minister was born in a predominantly French speaking province, therefore he had his law degree in French.
Being a lawyer is quite different from being illiterate, therefore I can assume you still need to know the meaning of your words.

That said, he had a long career in politics and was elected as Prime Minister three times.
His half-mouth condition was due to early illness, so your sarcasm is cheap and out of touch.

In conclusion, you have proven what worthless person you are, and if Canadians elect a Prime Minister that you don't like, the exit door is always open if you want to leave.

hmmmm you have proven that you are iliterate not knowing that canada is a bilingual country !!!!
Secondly you should talk you would not even make it close to prime minister with how uneducated you are .Your an immigrant coming to a new country yet you feel we should get rid of our exsisting french background for you !!! YOu seem to like bad talking Canada my question is why do you not then go back to your homeland ...No one is forcing you to stay here! Why did you leave your country if it was so great !!!

Although I was not too fond of Prime Minister Chretien when he was in power, it is important to note a few things here.

1) You selected a sample taken from a Canadian comedy show called the Royal Canadian Air Farce. They select sound bites that usually make politicians and famous people sound like total morons.

2) English is his second language, so he has a thick French accent and may not be pronouncing all the words properly or may not know that "fraud" cannot be used the same way as "rob/robbing". In French, "la fraude" and "frauder" is used similarly to "le vol" and "voler".

3) Jean Chretien suffers from a disease known as Bell's Palsy that causes partial paralysis of the face. Quite frankly, I find that calling M. Chretien a "half-mouth" is rather questionable and demeaning to all people who suffer from that disease. It's the equivalent of calling someone with Down's Syndrome a "retard", which is not acceptable.

M. Chretien did come up with a few wonderfully memorable quotes when he was in power, including the "resignation" and the "proof is in the proof" speeches, but considering he was in power for ten years and leader of the Liberal party of Canada for 13 years, he still has not managed near as many "memorable" quotes as other politicians.

I don"t mean to pick on the Americans, but look at Dan Quayle and George W. Bush for some perfect examples. How many great lines did they put out in the 4-year terms they have had? And they are English people trying to speak English!

That was then, this is now. Why are you living in the past? What's done is done. Besides, he wasn't illiterate. He just spoke better French than English.
