I know what you mean. I was born and raised in Canada, but now live in the US. I am surprised at all the questions I get, like: "What do you guys eat up there?"
"What do you have for animals, (like pets)?
"When you get to the border, do they have snowmobiles to get you home?"
"What is a chesterfield, a chest you keep on your land?
And the best one I hear repeatedly, "Oh, you are from Canada! Do you know so-and-so? They actually think of Canada as a small town! Hey stop and look at a map you guys, Canada runs across the whole top of the US. That's right, all the way from the east to the west! No I don't know so-and-so. Some also believe that the natives still run around with a tomahawk!

These questions (and many more) are NOT people having fun, they are serious questions. It is sad that so much of the US do not know anything about Canada. But you really can't blame the people. They actually want to know more about their northern neighbours, it is the education system that fails them. Sad but true.

You are correct. It is a part of our education system NOT to teach us here that there is intelligent life elsewhere. And don't feel alone, it is not just Canadians, the rest of the world is thought of as alien and backward. Very few of us, as US citizens don't realize that the term "Americans" relates to all citizens of the Americas, North, Central and South and we are slowly convincing the rest of the world that "American" refers only to US citizens.

So sorry, there is little I can do as an individual, other than to exert some influence on the people I know (and I do) to expand their knowledge and to influence others. This is at best a very slow process and you may not notice my work in your lifetime, but eventually, hopefully, it may have some effect.

Its part of the oil baron conspiracy to deny the effects of global warming and climate change. The Americans under George Bush don't want to admit taht our very way of life is under threat from their infatuation with burning fossil fuel.

I was just reading how in our nation's capital the world famous Ice Palace that houses our national assembly has begun to tilt dangerously as the south facing wall and supporting ice blocks has melted. so drastically. Apparently the thaw is so bad that President Harper's no longer able to travel to the capital by the traditional moose drawn carriage (they've been sinking in the mud that was once permafrost) and has apparently been forced to rely instead on the much lighter dog sleds. Vice President Poutine is preparing to declare a state of emergency.

They don't. You're just running into some who are either uneducated or trying to irk you.

I know that the Americans who live on the border near Canada, the south side near the Peter Mans Bridge don`t think like that, they know better.

Don't judge all of us just because there are a few stupid ones out there. I don't think Canadians live in igloos!

Well, I live in New Brunswick (NO, NOT New Jersey) and even the other Canadians don't know we are here.

But I will say, from meeting many people from the US, (I live right next to the border) they have an appalling lack of knowledge of geography. It evidently isn't something taught in their schools. I'm not too sure that much of it is taught in ours, either.

I know, sometimes I just play along because I live in the North, and they take me seriously, just get a good laugh out of it. I just tell them "yeah, my computer and internet is hooked up to the wall of the igloo"

Even Australians don't think that!
I think you may be exagerating somewhat.
Most of the United States citizens I know have respect for their northern neighbours.

popo dean
you guys are to cool with your sarcastic answers.

I Love It.

Why are Canadians so Arrogant and Egotistic...

needanid00
You guys don't live in Igloo's? wow I learned something today.

First of all I think your an idiot for believing that Americans think what you claim. I really doubt that you have read all over yahoo answers that Canadians live in igloos.

When I read your post with all its syntactical errors, the first thing I thought was that you might have missed out on reading and writing because you lived in an igloo.

funny how you talk of the ignorance of AMERICAN'S yet you cant even spell...looks like canadian educational system sure is working....
The fact of the matter is that canada's claim to fame is being located north of the best country in the world....besides that, what has canada really contributed to society, besides a herpes infested pam anderson?
you canadians copy everything that us AMERICAN'S do, look at your tv and i guarantee 97% of your shows have an AMERICAN influence, its actually embarrassing how weak canada is.....
I am not sure if you live in igloo's but i have heard that you all wear flannels, and all have pet beavers!

Well first before you call Americans names, you might want to learn to spell. Or at least use the spell check function. Second, don't generalize! Not all Americans think the same way, just as not all Canadians can't spell.

Personally, i just think Canadians are always rude, and tend to jump to conclusions. I think its the French influence.
