Why do Canadians champion multiculturalism and then complain about immigrants not integrating?

I think some of those complaints may relate to immigrants bringing some of their "problems" with them. A good example would be the Tamil Tigers. Some have decided to bring their fight here and on occasion, target non Tamils of Sri Lanka origin. That's not integrating. That's bringing a conflict here, where it doesn't belong. Bring the "good stuff" from a culture, leave the "baggage".

Multiculturalism is one thing, but it needs to be understood that immigrants are entering our country. When people are no longer allowed to say "Merry Christmas" for fear of offending somebody, then we have a problem. We can all get along as long as people respect our traditions and we will respect theirs. They can't expect to come here and change the few traditions that we have, just like I wouldn't expect to go to their countries and try to change theirs. We are a very tolerant country but it's got to be understood by all that when we recognize specific days as holidays we are not trying to offend anyone. It offends us that they would be offended and cry "racism" when we don't conform to their ways.

When I am working/living overseas I consider it common courtesy to respect the culture and learn to speak the language. It doesnt make me less Canadian.

I dont expect my host country to change their culture to my Canadian one to accomodate me.

Canada has festivals to "recognize, educated and honour" other cultures.

It does NOT say bring your culture to Canada and we will change ours to suit you, and our laws as well.

There is a HUGE difference.

Unfortunately many immigrants feel they can break Canadian laws because the laws in their countries allow them to carry weapons etc.

IMO Canada has to start denying entry to certain immigrants if they cant accept our laws and customs and honour and obey them - such as killing women who dont comply with their cultural expectations.

You want to burn a bride stay in India dont come to Canada.

Mexico hit the nail on the head.

Of course we celebrate multiculturalism. It's a great thing and we can learn so much from immigrants.

The problem is when immigrants come to Canada and expect Canadians to change their customs in order to not offend anyone. The biggest issue that has been in the media recently is the whole notion of not using the word "christmas". So it would mean no longer having christmas concerts, christmas trees, christmas presents. To me it doesn't make sense to change something that is celebrated by the majority of the population just so we don't offend someone who has moved to our country...nowing full well that we celebrate christmas.

Anyway, I still feel that most countries have a long way to go when it comes to being more welcoming, and less discriminatory but I think there needs to be more respect on both fronts.

Time to live
Its kind of funny eh!!! I think that some people really want to believe we are great and then they can't handle what being great implies.

There are a lot of people in Canada: some champion multiculturalism; some complain about immigrants; some appreciate the personal freedoms that we have; some of them think they know what's best for everyone else; and some don't really care about anyone except themselves.
Canada has been a fascinating social experiment for over a century that seems to have proven that basic human nature is immutable and ultimately self-destructing. My 2 cents.

It is not Canadians who champion multiculturalism but rather it is the slimeball federal Liberal Party since the late 60's and their crass ways of getting votes .

if we couldn't complain about something, how could we call ourselves Canadian? at least we don't start wars about it.
