Why do Canadians have such a bizarre hatred for Americans?

This article was in the Winnipeg Sun about US-Canada women's soccer game and I saw it on tv:

[The Canadian women face the world No. 1-ranked United States — and Canada’s public enemy No. 1 — in the Friday’s quarter-finals, a team that has handed the Canadians a few too many heartbreaking losses. “I’m so excited to play the States,” said striker Melissa Tancredi. “We hate each other, that’s pretty much it, it’s a great rivalry, it’s going to be a great game and it’s the Olympics, so it just raises the bar that much more."]

Since when did America become enemy no.1 in Canada? Why the "hatred"? How can it even be considered a rivalry when the US is no.1 in the world and Canada is at its first olympics and they suck. The US women probably hate the Beijing smog more than the Canadians. Why do Canadians always have this deranged sense of rivalry with the US? 99% of Americans never think about Canadians, see no rivalry, and couldn't even name the capital of Canada. This insane Candian jingoism has to stop. It's like Canadians think there is some kind of cold war with the US. There is no rivalry. You are not in our league, not militarily, economically, culturally, or even in women's soccer. You have become some of the most ignorant and rude people on the planet because of this insane hatred for America. Grow up and get a life!!!!

Additional Details
Billy James, thanks for the insults rather than actually addressing the question. loser.

You are misquoting or misrepresenting an article you read about a women's soccer matchup. The player (Melissa Tancredi) was referring to a healthy rivalry between two teams, not actual hatred.

It is the same thing that has been said by players and management from the Milwaukee Brewers about the Chicago Cubs in baseball, and by Boston Bruins players about Montreal Canadiens in hockey. But it does not mean that everyone in Milwaukee hates people from Chicago!

You always measure yourself against the best of the best, and some people may envy the ones that have more success. So we strive to make ourselves better and want to compete at "the next level". Don't mistake that to be hatred or bigotry against a country.

As for your other comments, they seem like they are based on a false sense of persecution bordering on paranoia. A "deranged" sense of rivalry? It is the USA that developed the term "dream team" when they sent their all-star basketball team to the Olympics a few years back. "Americans never think about Canadians"...so then why are you concerned about the quote and posting in a Canada forum? You call Canadians rude, but insult us by essentially telling us that our culture and economy is puny to you.

Quite frankly, I don't know why people post this type of message except to be a troll and try to get people upset and angry. But hey if this what gets your rocks off, have fun tonight!

If Americans don't think about Canadians why are you on here insulting us?

Talk about needing to get a life.

I think your confusing hatred with healthy sports rivals. Canadians do not "hate" americans.. You are like cousins, we share the same continent, we are the top buyer for 31 of your 50 states and you take 80% of our exports, we share the same electrical grid, pipelines, communication networks and even militarily our ships and aircraft fit seamlessly into your formations and visa versa. We are the two most integrated countries in the world. And American ignorance of geography outside their own borders.. well thats legendary. American arrogance... well I think your post is a shining example of that.
and yes, I hope our women's soccer team kicks the snot out of you.

Janell T
I think you need to research a little more dear....we don't "hate" Americans as bad as you may think .As far as the rivalry goes...it's a freindly one and yes we are way above you leaguewise as we are able to name not only all of your States but all of their capitals too.Maybe if you took the time to learn as much about us as we have to learn about your country then you would be able to have an educated opinion. So go back to school and get yourself a life!

Caroline J
They don't. But you evidently have a bizarre hatred for Canadians.

Your post is so full of errors it is unbelievable. Canada is not at its first olympics, are you serious, our 1st olympic gold was won in 1920. Economically, the US is broke. Maybe you don't know it yet, but it is. The Bush Administration has not handled your money well. Borrow, borrow, borrow. The lower our dollar is compared to yours the more we benefit: all trade between Canada and the US is done in US dollars. Who do you think gets the exchange? Culturally you don't have a culture, you pride yourselves on the 'melting pot', remember?

It is people like you who give impression of the American people as arrogant and ignorant.

Well I'm from Australia and generally love all races. But here's a run-down of maybe why:

USA:

You are fat.
You are war starters.
You know nothing about any other culture.
You are mostly un-intellegent and think university/"college" is mostly a big party.
You do not blend in well when travelling overseas.
You are loud and disruptive at the best of times.
You create the largest amount of pollution in the world reletive to your population.
You carry guns for no reason other than to "protect yourself".
You think the world is "jealous" of you.

Did you think about these reasons??? It is highly possible that these are the reasons why people think less of the USA and would prefer to go to a safe, healthy, pretty, fun place like Canada.

I'm sure it isn't just the Canadian team that hate you. I bet there'd be plenty of other teams that are thinking exactly the same thing, but just haven't said it out loud to the media like that striker has. Imagine how you would feel if the english/brazilian/argentinian/german men's soccer teams absolutely destroyed your USA men's soccer team... the world would throw a party and give the USA the two finger solute.

Bob D
Wow. Sports teams always hate each other and for you to let loose with your little diatribe honestly only serves to show ignorance. I am not trying to be rude here, I am a proud Canadian and you are obviously a proud American but seriously pal, get a grip. You insult an entire nation and then when someone throws one your way, you tell them to grow up, lol. Re-read what was said, "this is a great rivalry" , most athletes "hate" to lose, ours included and as far as not being in your league militarily, economically, culturally??? You have 10 times the population, our military has fought in both World Wars, Korea, are in Afghanistan with you, ask any WW2 vet what they think of our troops, our guys were used as decoys so yours could land on Normandy. Economically??? If I could tell you where to stick your trillions of dollars in debt without being rude, I would. Who is the largest supplier of your oil, CANADA. Where is your fresh water going to come from in the coming years, CANADA. And if you are an example of cultural superiority, you can have it. Don't throw insults if you can't recieve them pal, we have been there for your Country every time we have been needed, our hospital ships beat FEMA to New Orleans after Katrina, we were there after 9-11 helping , we are still in Afghanistan . There is no hatred here for the U.S., sure some may, as some Americans may feel superior but historically, we have been your closest ally, the border between us is the envy of the World, so please think twice before dissing an entire Nation over a sports event.

P.S.
I really don't want to stoop to your level here bud but more Americans have burned American flags than Canadians have burnt Canadian flags. You missed my entire point, your question was about a clip from an athlete and you turned it into something entirely different. Sure some hate the US up here, hatred doesn't recognize borders, Canada is far from perfect but your little rant makes it sound like we all hate the US, I don't hate anyone let alone an entire Nation but whatever , you are still our neighbours and you are welcome for all the help we have given you over the years(and thanks for the help you've given us).

We don't hate you. We are just fed up with your ignorance about us. We are one of two of your closest neighbour and ally and trading partner and yet, you know so little about us.

jenny
I always thought it was the other way around actually. I've always heard that American's don't like us Canadians. Though, you shouldn't tell all of us to grow up and get a life, since I don't hate American's, have nothing against them, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So I don't think you should point this towards the entire country. We're just the peace keeping country I thought? :)

If the US women's soccer team is rated number one (I don't know and really couldn't care less) then any team whether Canadian or otherwise that is playing against them is going to be "up" for the match. When you go against the #1 rated team in any sport you have to be pumped up in order to play your best. As far as all these other nonsensical comments, I recall back to the Salt Lake Winter Olympics where the US women's hockey team allegedly threw a Canadian flag on the floor of their dressing room and walked on it. An american player also apparently made disparaging remarks to a Canadian girl about the very recent death of her father. Sports at this level isn't about 'sportsmanship' it's about winning. (By the way - the Canadian girls kicked US butt, in spite of a US referee who clearly was doing everything in her power to ensure a US victory).

why would you think????

" .1 in the world and Canada is at its first olympics and they suck "

likely coz your obnoxious overweight ignorant pricks?

Janelle L
I think its the other way around, It's americans who hate us, Iv never has a problem with americans and always saw them as equals but ever since i'v seen some of the question on here, iv lost all respect for america and all americans. And as for canadians burning an american flag, thats bull and im sorry but i dont believe you, if you dont believe me, just search some questino on here saying canada sucks and you wont believe some of the things americans say about us

K B
Are you leaving your brain to science? I sure hope so. Someone needs to find out how you came to this convoluted way of thinking!

Francois Quebequois
According to a Recent popular US article on the L.A. Times.

A little question of history. Mordecai Richler (a Canadian satirical novelist and satirical children's novelist) once suggested that what defines Canadians is the fact that we're all, quite literally, losers--and we've never gotten over the fact. Nobody actually actively chose to live here because they really liked the idea. The natives, who were always here, didn't choose to have the European-dominated country of Canada imposed on top of them--but they lost battles, and so became Canadians. Losers. The French in Quebec are Canadians because the British defeated them back in the eighteenth century (and they sure don't like that fact these days). Losers, right? The British-based population of Canada consists of two major groups: United Empire Loyalists, the people in the American colonies who sided with Britain in the war of independence and lost, and so had to flee to Ontario and the Maritimes; and immigrants from England, most obviously people who were doing poorly there, losers at the game of life who decided to set out and try again somewhere else. Losers all again. Throughout this century, people who have immigrated to Canada have tended to be people who have lost elsewhere--lost wars, lost land, etc. Losers yet again. My own ancestors came here because of pogroms in Eastern Europe that destroyed their homes--and would have preferred to go to the US but they couldn't get in, so they settled for Canada, poor losers. We Canadians aren't patriotic because we really only settle for being here, all of us, rather than being delighted by it--and we love to whine about it. Losers for sure, eh?
