Why do Canadians not care for their country? |
It seems Canadians are more interested in the US elections than their own. I read in I think Globe and Mail that there is going to be a debate coming up involving all the Canadian political parties but because it clashes with the American debates, the writer mentioned that this will cause some dilemma for Canadians who would want to watch the American debates.
Shouldn't Canadians be more interested in the Canadian election debate after all that is what going to affect them.
Not too long ago, I saw a poll stating that Canadians prefer Obama to their own candidates and that they would give up a chance to vote in Canada to vote for Obama.
Why are Canadians more interested in the American election than the Canadian election. Why are Canadians so American-Oriented.
Why are Canadian election so short with just a month away that is just too short a time to find out more about the political parties. |

Its not that we don't care about our country. We are interested in our neighbours to the south like you should be to the north. I guess we are just nicer and smarter people. |

This is the best entertainment you can get right now. All eyes are on the US and this election they even know how much trouble we are in and in for. They find it a bit amusing. |

Actually you misunderstand the issue. Most Canadians are extremely proud of their country and very involved.
However, we also care about the rest of the world. We like to know what is going on elsewhere. Many Americans I know tend to live in a bubble and only care about their own country. As world citizens we like to know everything that is happening, not just our own little place. |

everybody knows your next election is a really big one its all your hear about..and whether we like it or not its going to effect us so why not. Our election isn't as controversial the american one. Everybody knows who they are going to vote for in Canada already. So we are interested in your election. Why do you care anyway?? |

I was unaware of this, most Canadians I know are fairly involved with their own nation and proud of it. Sometimes overly nationalistic at times, in fact.
As an American, I find it very odd that everyone is so very interested in the US elections worldwide. |

Canadian elections campaigns are a lot shorter and to the point. They also cost a lot less.
Therefore they do not have the glitz and performances of American presidential elections - thank Heavens.
If you run a political poll like that in Canada, you should expect daft answers; they have a dry sense of humor. |

Canadians cannot help but know alot about the US election, they get so much US TV that some nights all you can find to watch are programs about the US election debates. The Canadian political leaders are not as 'hollywood' as their US counterparts - more like your traditional politicians but when you have the US leaders to compare them too they seem very dull.
It's the same in the UK we hear alot about the US elections and our current leader so boring we wish we'd have a leader like one of the US candidates. UK and Canadian political parties don't want to waste millions of dollars/pounds travelling around for years to get votes. |

No matter what country you live in the world, you ought to care whom your neighbors elect because it will affect your country in one way or another. In the US you have politicians who are made to be larger than life personalities. So it's quite entertaining to watch. Besides, we have to watch if we want to get the jokes on the Colbert Show, SNL and the Late Show. As for only having 2 months to get to know the parties-that's plenty of time-we pretty much know who they are already save for one new party that's been added to the mix. Our leaders don't turn over like yours do-they tend to stay on for years and years.
The reason we seem apathetic about this particular election is that it ought not have been called in the first place. |

Perhaps you should consider the source of your information. Some bullsh!t writer at the Globe and Mail has no clue about how Canadians care for their country.
Unlike the Americans we do not need to campaign for years on end to figure out who will best serve our country.
Basically we have the guy who's done a good job, and the French guy who wants to let Quebec separate. Then we have the other guy that will only win in one or two provinces. Then there's this lady who no ones ever heard of.Let's see who Canadians choose. I can almost guarantee it will be Harper. |

I dont know who you polled to come to your conclusions. I could give a flying frito about american politics primarily because I dont vote in the US.
That said; McCain will be much better for Canada than protectionist Osama. The US is after all our biggest export market. |

I'm a Canadian and I have no interest in Canadian politics. I know many fellow Canadians who have zero interest in our politics. Why? Probably because our issues aren't as important as America's.
Yes, I would give up a chance to vote in Canada to vote for the Presidential elections in 2008. It's not just Canadians who are into American politics, the whole world is. It's a good heads up for people who'd like to know which oil-rich country will be 'liberated' by the US, killing tens of thousands of innocents and profiting Corporate America. "Freedom isn't Free!"
^Slip, I don't find it odd that people are interested in American politics. America's foreign policies affect the whole world (ie wars, wars, wars, and more wars). And then some Americans wonder why the world hates them. |
