Same coin currency values (penny, nickle, dime, quarter) and cross-border shopping means that many American and Canadian coins get mixed up between countries along the way.
If you don't like them, ship them back to this address:
Royal Canadian Mint
320 Sussex Drive
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0G8
They won't send you back American coins in exchange, but they will send you a heartfelt thanks! |

It seems the only American change this Canadian finds much of is pennies - do Americans bring only their pennies when they venture north of the border? |

it's because we share a huge border, and nobody really pays attention to change - I accept American coins where I work, and when I'm in the states, I just lump all my change together so I end up paying with Canadian coins too. |

You didn't know? It's a covert Canadian operation to slowly take over your country. Somebody has to clean up the mess! |

why do i keep getting american coins? its because people from Canada go down to the US and buy stuff and use Canadian coins. or some Americans come up to Canada, buy something and get Canadian change back, then turn around and use it in the US. |

If you're in a border region you'll get a lot from tourists and travelers
Canadians get a lot of US coins as well --Small change is treated on a par basis |

Because we share a border and the coins are very similar. The sizes, colors, denominations are all the same so it's easy for them to get mixed up. You don't see Mexican coins getting mixed in because they're completely different.
You should save them up and exchange them. The Canadian dollar is actually worth more than the the US dollar these days. I remember when the Canadian dollar was only worth 70 cents, now it has switched and the U.S. dollar is only worth 70 Canadian cents. |
