There are no "rights" or "wrongs" in cultural differences in spelling.
As a matter of fact, Canadian spelling is closer to the British way of spelling, which is the "original" way.
This is all due to cultural and historical differences that make languages so diverse and beautiful. |

Canadians spell everything the same way the English do, you are used to Americanized English which is actually newer and therefore if one was to be wrong, it would be your way. Both ways of those spellings are considered correct. I'm sorry your American attitude of thinking your way is the only right way and everyone else is wrong, is causing you grief |

Just because it's different doesn't mean it's wrong... Maybe it's us that have it backwards..who knows. |

My husband is canadian...he spells perfect, better than me that is....i think the UK spells words like the ones you have given in your example. It just depends on where you are from......maybe the canadians think you spell everything wrong! |

Well, that's because they have alot of French influence. Their country was founded a little differently than our own, so of course there would be differences.
It's certainly not anything to get overheated about, it's really better off to have differences in cultures and languages, as diversity makes life more interesting. Just imagine if the whole world spoke the same language, using the same dialect as we did. Sure, it would make some things easier (travel for example) but it would be so dull and boring.
We also have to consider our own language compared to British English. Our ancestors were European immigrants and spoke British English rather than what we use today, and the British think we talk funny!
Diversity: the spice of life! |

That's actually a typical American thing to say. It's actually Americans who have it wrong. Canadians learned to spell from the English. The English were around long before Americans. We could ask the same about why Americans continue to use imperial measures instead of metric. We spell colour and flavour with a "u" as well. Sorry if you don't like it. If you don't like it that much then stay away. You're running out of countries where you're welcome anyway. The vast majority of Answers users are American and personally I find it appalling how poor the grammar is.
Hey "Chicken Boy"! Are you one of those Americans who put a Canadian flag on your packpack to get better treatment from Europeans? Try it, you'd be surpised how much more welcome you are. "Supersize me". |

Canadians use proper English. Centre is a place. Center is the middle. Americans use their own dumb-downed version of the English language so their President can understand it. French and English are the official languages of Canada, so both are put on our products. I think a better question would have been, "Why are so many Americans oblivious to the rest of the world?" |

Canadians are using the British spelling of such words. |

What are you american or something? Would you rather we did everything like you? There are probably other things in the world that should be driving you crazy but you should just keep worrying about what canadians are doing. |

wow...for it to drive u crazy i hope u actually live in canada...but for sake of conversation, our english doesnt exactly stem from the exact same roots as americanized english does. the rest is due to evolution of the language, and if u ever stepped out of your town before, u would see that even within american states, the language changes a lot. about the french language...well, i live in montreal and frankly, it pisses the crap out of me, but then again, montreal is statistically known to be the most culturally diversified city in the world, so somewhere, somehow, both french and english have to have their place. and that's where colour/color and center/centre comes in...look at it this way, at least there are more chances of getting it right if u r not sure on the spelling! ;)
PS: meta4icks...love u bro!u r hilarious! |

Canadians do not spell everything wrong. We just spell things differently to drive Americans nuts.
Many of us can speak more than one language. We often begin a sentence in english and end it in french when speaking to an American. This drives them nuts.
We have bilingual signs. This drives Americans nuts.
We use the metric system. This drives Americans nuts.
We have a Queen, Governor General and Prime Minister. This drives American nuts.
Our national pastime is: DRIVING AMERICANS NUTS! |

they are spelling the words in english. they are just not spelling them americanised. colour. parlour. if it drives you crazy, imagine what the rest of the world has to put up with dealing with americans. |

They really dont spell it wrong. The pronounce it wrong, and people just like to spell it how they pronounce it sometimes.
Just liek why do mexicans say Yob instead of Job?
Just how they grew up saying crap. |

They don't spell everything wrong, they are actually using proper English (as in English that comes from England). English from the United States has been "watered-down" so to speak.
As for the French, well...it is the prominent language in Quebec, I expect it would be used in a lot of places in Canada. |

how do you know that canadians are spelling things wrong, maybe others like the US and Europe are spelling thing wrong that should be the question. As Canadians we believe that we arent spelling things wrong, but everyone else is spelling things wrong because they are different from us. We are right and will always be. I AM CANADIAN !!!!!!!!!!! |

Canada was "founded" by the french....read you're history...so any one who have a french background would be prone spell anything in the french way, I know I have. It's not that they spell it wrong they were taught that way and the brittish spell it centre too >P |

canadians spell like the british do...it isn't wrong. they just have hints of olde (<-example) english. lol, and the french thing? well, canada was originally settled by the french so some customs have obviously been brought down from the generations. |

Actually, it's Americans who spell everything wrong. English is a language that developed in England. The United States, under the influence of Daniel Webster, chose to "reform" its spelling. England kept the original spelling. Canada is sometimes in-between - when I was growing up in Canada, both American and British spellings were acceptable in school for some words. |

I hope you have a better perspective on the ways of the world. Welcome to Earth, you know that place where trillions of people live within a variety of different countries, all speaking different languages, living their different cultures, speaking and writing THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. Perhaps we could all learn something here; think about your questions before you display your hidden ignorance. |
