Andromedan_Ambassado...

Why do city people wear jeans in winter, even in CANADA?

OK, so it's well known that cotton is BAD for winter wear. It absorbs water and loses all insulating ability.
And jeans are made of cotton.

So why?
Additional Details
Well yeah, I was thinking of ski pants or something similar

Even in the middle of winter, when it's snowing heavily, you aren't going to get terribly wet. The colder it is, the drier the snow is, after all - it tends to fall off you while still frozen.

If you are outdoors engaging in activity that gets you in the snow (like skiing, tobogganing, etc.) then yes, wearing jeans is probably not the wisest thing to do, but most of the time your choice of legwear is not that crucial as long as it keeps you warm enough when it's dry.

Bear in mind that most Canadians drive to work. Their houses are heated, their cars are heated and their offices are heated. It is not that uncommon to see people wearing ordinary running shoes in the winter, because unless you are outside for extended periods, your feet tend to stay warm enough. (I wear boots, not only for warmth but for traction.)

id like to be informed on what else one would wear? ..besides ski pants..

natycarj
Maybe because jeans are comfortable and go with anything; maybe they have nothing warmer to wear... All the cases would apply to me, I wear jeans when it's cold.

NWIP
Not every place in Canada gets snow in the winter so ski pants are not something you can wear everyday around. They are normally to be worn when you are skiing or in the snow for a long period of time. Jeans are a heavier material that cuts down on the wind & the cold during the cooler time of year.

Still, we're Canadians, and cool with the cold. Born in Bobcaygeon, and snowmobile in my jeans, good boots and mitts though, II ski in jeans treated with a waterproofing. But when it hits 30 below F, I stay inside by the fire, or am actually forced into survival gear. Haven't had a bad cold in years, and if my feet are dry, I am good to go.

because jeans are jeans and everyone wears jeans.
plus its not thaattt cold. like ya its -20 at times but its not like you stay outside in a feild for hours. you go inside to warm up.
and at those tempertatures, you don't get wet because everythings frozen.

Ski pants are for skiing, I wear woolen dress pants as well as jeans, long skirts. It isnt THAT cold here, you arent going to the arctic. Why do people in places like Montana, Idaho, Washington wear jeans in the winter?

There isnt like this huge ice cave that you enter when you cross the border into Canada - its pretty safe to assume the weather will be the same as it is 100 feet away in the USA

ratzfatzhosenlatz
If the jeans are baggy enough to cover-up my long-johns, why not? And who said that a winter in Canada is always wet and cold?
