Why do most canadians hate my city of toronto?

Ditto the first 3 answers. If Toronto was on my route somewhere, I would take a detour around Toronto, even if it added a day to my trip. Toronto should join the US. I would say more about what you guys are doing with Americans, but then I would get reported.

I think a true Canadian would NEVER compare one of our cities with American cities...especially the ones you picked...obviously you are either an American, or you have never travelled to the cities.
Most Canadians do not hate Toronto. You are ignorant of Canadians...I cannot believe you are one.
Oh...and Steven N...my dad is the number one Habs fan and living in Ontario he too faithfully watches his team in French...if you and him would pick a better team like the Leafs you wouldn't have that problem...LOL...(TML fan..could you tell?)

Some people (and I think mostly immature or unsuccessful) people are just jealous.
Interestingly, in all negative comments about Toronto people expressed here, they state that their main reason for disliking Toronto is that "people of Toronto think they are the center of the universe". But living in Toronto for many years, I have never heard anyone saying (or expressing in any other way) the idea of "being better than the rest of Canada" or something like that. Quite opposite: people here usually love different other places in Canada, and many came from other cities and provinces, without patronizing them or anything like that.
BTW I wouldn't compare Toronto to LA, I think Toronto is much much nicer :)

Adrian C- Dont give into thinking that most of the people in the country hate Toronto, that is total bull. Most people in Canada have no hatred for Toronto and these people answering the question do not represent the general feeling of Canadians. If it does there sure are a lot of ignorant people out there.
I grew up in saskatchewan, and as I grew up I heard a lot of anti Toronto sentiment that I truly never understood. After I heard things from people that they hated about Toronto and the people in it I would ask, have you ever been to Toronto? Have you ever met a Torontonian that you truly hated? And 99% of the time people would answere NO. So I would just assume than that they are an ignorant person and like to hate on things they don't understand.
Later in life I actually moved to Toronto for school, and have come to realize that 99% of the anti Toronto center of the universe stuff is complete unfounded bull. Torontonians do not think they are the center of the Universe, in fact if anything they are self loathing sometimes and they don't have a beef with anybody outside of Toronto. They don't have any anti city that they hate just for fun, almost half of Torontonians arent even from Canada and don't understand why the rest of Canada would hate something that the rest of the world thinks they should be proud of.
If you look at most of the answers you were given, most of them give no insight or detail into reasons why they hate Toronto besides, "Its the center of the Universe".
I tend to disagree with you that Toronto is a mix of L.A and NYC. Toronto is it's own city and its time Canadians started being proud of all parts of Canada and start seeing the good in things and not just the negatives. I mean I love every part of this country and most Torontonians would agree with me.

SteveN- I don't know if you understand why Toronto news and sports dominate the media. It's completely because the of our population, over 7 millions people live with 45 minutes of the GTA therefore when there is news in the city of Toronto many more people will be watching, which is what advertisers want. The advertisers that you see pay for everything. So when there is a Calgary flames game on, less advertisers want to be part of the broadcast and there is less money to be made. It isnt just Toronto thinking everyone in the country needs to know what is going on in the city. It is advertisers knowing that when something is happening in Toronto, more people are watching.
And what you said about additional crime makes no sense as Toronto is the safest large city in Canada, and North America according to all recent crime statistics. In 2008 we had about 70 murders where a place like Chicago which compares with us in population had about 500. So to say Toronto has lost what it means to be Canadian is totally false, in fact you could say with Toronto being the Liberal home base, there is more anti American sentiment here than anywhere in the country and people here are extremely proud to be Canadian and don't threaten to leave Canada every time someone wrongs them as half of your province does. I mean most of your seats in parliament went to a party who wants to break up the country, and thats a more Canadian place than Toronto.

This is the most ignorant comment ive heard in a while. I don't think you understand how many billions of dollars that Ontario has given away to other places in the country that it will never get back. Ontario gives far more to the government than it gets back, I mean where do you think the government gets its money from? Ontario has been the countries wallet for years. Even though what you have said makes no sense, why wouldnt it make sense for the government to give more money to you the more people you have.

Dead Day, I have given your answer a thumbs down because you do not represent the general feeling of Torontonians although I think you might have been being sarcastic, how Canadian of you. Although a very small percentage of the anti Toronto feeling comes from envy, we don't feel we are better than others.

After visiting all three of the cities you mentioned, I would say Toronto is nothing like NYC or LA.

It's a Canadian past-time (right or wrong) to hate Toronto. Almost 6 million people live the in the Greater Toronto Area and as a result we get more air time in the media and sports programming than other cities.

The most two myths I hate the most are 1) It's an American City (clearly not the case) 2) It gets more tax money then the rest of Canada (for every $10 a Torontonian pays in taxes they only get $3 back).

We are a cosmopolitan city, a plethora of shopping and great cuisine. We are the financial capital of Canada - it's a national pastime for Canadians to hate Toronto. If you go to Montreal, they are so open about it. I've lived in Winnipeg and they hate us there too. I've been to Vancouver and they hate us there too.

I don't hate Toronto. But I do get annoyed sometimes that people in Toronto sometimes think that they are the only important people in Canada.

This is also reflected in the programming that you see on Canadian television. On a recent holiday, CTV was showing the news from its Toronto headquarters instead of local Montreal news. TSN and CBC show Ontario sports teams to all of Eastern Canada.

Whenever the Maple Leafs are playing, every channel east of Winnipeg has to get the feed to watch a team that was expected to come in LAST place this year (and is currently sitting in 25th). English Canadians in Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces have to watch Montreal Canadiens in French on RDS if they want to see the game that night. (It's better there anyway, since the announcers don't seem to be as biased towards one team...)

And Toronto is the most Americanized city in Canada, meaning that they are getting away from the core values of what it means to be Canadian. You yourself even compared Toronto to a combination of New York City and Los Angeles. I've been to both cities, and many areas in NYC are run-down, dirty and old. The buildings in LA are not much better, with whole streets of barred up buildings, fences with barb wire, and you have the additional crime aspect.

Obviously as I am located in Montreal, I can only tell you from what I see in my point of view. Someone from Moncton or Halifax may say something different.

There are plenty of people in Toronto that are nice, and areas that are great (I like Markham and Mississauga myself), so just keep a friendly face, help out a stranger, and I'm sure eventually Toronto will be less of a target of envy by the rest of us. Although, in Quebec, remember that we will still hate the Leafs! :-)
