Because they are jealous of us I guess. I am not sure who these "people" you are referring to are so it is hard to say why.

If was not for our oil, water, lumber, beef and trade the US would have to invade Saudia Arabia or another country for there resources.

We in Canada have been voted by the UN in the last 10 yrs, the best country to live-in 5 times, look to the rest of the world, only the Scandinavian country beat us out. We are the most respected people in the world, I have travelled all over and seen Yankee's spit on and refused service, never a Canadian.

And like Kango mentioned, if the freeloading term was referring to our military, he is right that we do not have as big a military force as a country of our size should. We have roughly 60,000 active troops. Compare that to 1.4 million active troops in USA, and we actually have more geographic area to cover.

However, we have an ally in the US running the full length of our southern border, and the Arctic circle with its snow, icebergs, and polar bears to the north. Our focus is on a military presence on each coast, military bases in strategic locations across the country, and NATO early warning stations located on the coasts and northern extremes of the country.

We perhaps do not protect the southern border as much as we should, but we tend to assume that the Americans are not planning a massive invasion of Canada in order to make sure they get their Montreal bagels and to stop the broadcast of shows like "Little Mosque on the Prairie" or "Corner Gas".

I presume these people that you are talking about are some sort of foreigner.

One of the things I have noticed in Canada is that they tend not to be unpleasant or make inappropriate jokes about foreigners.

They've got some good jokes about each other, though..

we aren't free loaders...military we are peacekeepers for the UN mostly. and i live in Alberta where there is a hell of a lot of oil....sooooo where ever you heard we are freeloaders...thats just ignorance

The term freeloaders basically means to rely on the generosity of others without doing much yourself. I'm pretty sure this is with reference to Canada-US relations and not a jab at Canadian people per se.

Some people may view Canada as freeloading off of America. This can take many forms, most notably defense. Canada's army is rather small for a country of its size. It can do this because of its mighty southern neighbor. Canada knows that in a time of crisis the US will protect it and so does little for itself in ways of defense. Thus, Canadians can be seen as freeloading off of the United States military machine.
