The Dude

Why do some Americans immigrate to Canada?

And how would they fit in there? I'm considering immigrating there in a few years.

They are looking for a safer, cleaner, more polite and less corrupt society, one that is more friendly and doesn't force people to be " Canadian " if they don't want to be. Compare that attitude to the US, especially the right wingers, down south.

No one here will know that you are an American, until you speak. So, fitting in is a matter of being willing to learn new things, and to remember that you are not "at home any more ". If you keep on saying....... " We don't do it that way back home " you will find many Canadians will get tired of your company. Having an open and relaxed attitude will be most helpful.

One further point.......There are a number of people living in Canada, whose original country may have been directly affected by US military forces, so they don't like Americans. Try to keep a low profile and you will be fine, but if you play the patriot game , be prepared to get heat about it here.

Actually it would be emigrating to (you immigrate into, emigrate out to...)

My husband is Canadian and I am American. I would have loved to have emigrated to Canada, but the job prospect was better for him to come to the US. As far as fitting in, there's not a big difference between Canada and the US (save Quebec), so it's easy to acclimate with the possible exception of climate depending on what part of the US you live in now. The last time I checked into emigrating you are required to have some sort of special skill to be allowed to actually move there (the job market is tight up there with some provinces worse off than others--especially the Maritimes.)

Good luck and I, myself, am deeply jealous.

i guess they.re not happy with all the violence and hate in the states...i'm not sure about fitting in, most wouldn't, we don't carry guns for one...

and we take our shoes off when we enter our own, or other people's home... sooooo..... you could be in for a culture shock!

Welcome to Canada, immigration Canada website would be a good thing to google. You will fit in just fine as long as you arent moving to French Canada, we welcome all cultures with open arms, just don't wear a George Bush shirt.
