Why do the Canadian provinces behave like they are separate countries?

Don't they all fly the same flag and pledge allegiance to the same Queen? I am absolutely stunned that they consider their individual success over the survival of the confederation sometimes.

Actually States have more power than Provinces have. Example: In Canada the death penalty is overlooked by our Federal government so if it's on ...it's on for every provinces...unlike the US where each State gets to decides if he want death penalty or not. This is just one example out of many. So my question to you is....why do your States act like they're separate countries?

ADD: I know there is no death penalty in Canada...that was an example!! To inform those who are under 40...canada used to have death penalty.

The USA! Canada's 11th province.

Because each province is larger than most countries in the world and each are in different time zones, climate zones, trade agreements, and internal tasks. I don't think it's true that they think of their individual success over that of the confederation - with the noticeable exception of quebec, but it is because they are geographically dispersed.

We don't! Each province may have it's own flags... different laws etc. but at the end of the day we come together as one! Canada! To have such a great big land its hard to re enforce the same laws al through out! None of the provinces Quebec included considers their success over Confederation because each and every Canadian knows that the only reason we are so great of a country is because we are one and together we made this country... and that each and ever one of us have contributed! At the end of the day we are all proud to wave the CANADIAN flag, to sing O CANADA and to call our selves CANADIANS and not Quebecois, Newfoundlanders etc.

Uhm... there is no death penalty in Canada. Singapore, Japan and US are the only "developed" countries left that still have the death penalty.

Read and memorize Michael C's answer to you. Then try to understand it.

HAPA CHIC
well why in the USA does each state laws vary from state to state ?
IN Canada laws are at least the same from province to province
and thats your opinion.Except for Quebec I would not say that

Canadian provinces behave like separate countries because it would be very challenging to give all of Canada specific rules since we're very different. Quebec is the reason so many people believe that we are more separated than we actually are, they have their own laws to preserve the french culture. We don't consider individual success over the survival of the confederation, the only people that do are the separtists in Quebec (the radicals who believe Quebec should be it's own country). In fact, we act like one country more than the united states does, we are way more consistent with our laws. For example, when driving through the north-eastern states in Vermont you must wear a seatbelt, in New Hampshire if you're over 18 you don't have to. In Canada it's illegal not to wear a seatbelt, period.

It's true that we all fly the same flag, but each province and territory each has their own flag as well to represent the diversity in Canada.

Because they're all so differant. Differant culters...backgrounds...people...etc. We all like each other with the possible exception of quebec

Because they believe in the prominent role of a limited local government in accordance with the teachings of The Book of Ron Paul.

Well, Quebec is probably the province that has made it the most public that it want's to separate. French people are separatists, they see their allegiance to France, not to Britain. Therefore they do not really want to be a part of Canada, as 95% of French speaking people live in Quebec. However throughout WWI and WWII, France didn't really care much about Quebec so that is why they have not separated until this day...

Why would Canadians pledge allegiance to the Queen?
Canada is it's own country as of 1867, the Queen can bite ***.
