Why does CANADA have the hardest laws on DUI offences?

Hi, I think its true that U.S has similar laws as Canada in regards to dui....canadians with dui records face denial at the US border as well.
I dont agree that they impound your car for a first offence and send you home in a cab...thats probably officers discretion...never seen or heard of that happening myself .
I do believe that all govmt across the world need to look at other ways of increasing safety besides tougher and tougher laws...the US has death penalty for murder in a lot of its states, but that still doesnt stop murders from happening....free taxi rides would probably knock out more than 50% of dui but that will never happen. allowing impaired people 1 hour of travel time when other people could be warned about impaired people travelling might shave it down more but that will also never happen.
I sometimes wonder if the govmnt is concerned about the actual fatalities on the hiways or forcing people to obey its laws, I think tougher laws are going to start making people take part in high speed chases to avoid the penalties.
And as for Saudi Arabia, and turkey, iraq, etc, they have extreme laws regarding dui but it still doesnt stop it also these countries are generally the same places where you go to prison for chewing gum on buses, women not allowed out after 5 pm, you get executed for speaking against the government so excuse me if I dont praise these countries for their wisdoms.
I think both the US and Canada are some of the most free places in the world, but along with our freedoms comes some risk...I'd rather live with the freedom and risk than live in a country like Saudi Arabia anyday.

I don't think that DUI law's are strong enough, they should be
If you have ever seen a wreck envolving a person you would understand.
They are the one's that come out of the wreck and only have a scratch or two. my friend was killed by a drunk driver I think they should be in prison for ever

You are confusing apples and oranges. Many US states have DUI laws as severe or more so than the differing Canadian provinces. And the USA has the same right to deny cross-border access to Canadians with a DUI conviction, and in fact American officers are more likely to ask the question, from my experience.

The right to refuse entry to a person who has a history of criminality is an Immigration law issue.

We don't. It is the USA that has tough DUI laws. You are sort of caught in the middle. Canada immigration rules say that we are going to look you over a lot more if you have a serious crime. In the USA a serious crime is a Felony. And in the USA you can get a Felony for a DUI on the first offense.

But Canada reserves the right to say we don't think certain things are a crime and won't stop entry if people do it. Say someone gets 20 years for cheating on his wife. We say that's not a crime in Canada and they are fine. However, a DUI similar charge is a crime in Canada. The problem is, in Canada they "generally" impound your car and send you home in a cab the first time - no criminal charge. Maybe even the second time. If you are a multiple abuser or if you get in a serious accident then you get a felony. So, we have that crime.

So it it the US that has hard laws on DUI's. Blame your own country. On the other side of the fence, the US will keep Canadians out if they were charged with smoking pot on the street corner once or a prostitution charge. Far from keeping out terrorists and murderers.

Try Saudi Arabia on for size if you think Canada's tough.

Just having alcohol there is good for 80 lashes. I'd imagine a DUI gets your head removed.
