Why does Toronto hate being part of Canada so intensely?

I am being provocative, natch, but it seems to me that many Toronto businesses and citizens love all things American and despise things in Canada. Why is this? Insecurity? Poor education?

I have never noticed this and I have lived in Toronto my entire life. And as for poor education, check the stats, people in Toronto are not poorly educated. We are also not insecure although interesting that you would think so considering that most people think we are too confident. Most people would not say that we hate being part of Canada but that we think that we ARE Canada.

We love things that we want to love whether they are American, Canadian or otherwise. We are a city of many nationalities and so maybe we seem less "Canadian" to you--because we accept others so well.

We are who we are, hate us or love us.

Have a good day.

I'm an American that visits Toronto often. I don't get that vibe from the people there.

Sure there are American businesses based in Canada but there is also a good share of Canadian businesses (Tim Hortons, Roots, The Bay, Loblaws, Zellers, Mr. Sub, Harvey's) that Canadians are proud of, especially because they are Canadian based businesses.

MAYBE, there could be a hatred between English businesses and French businesses, mainly in Quebec. But Toronto is totally Canadian and people who live there LOVE being Canadians.

Well, this is news to me. I don't live in Canada but the rest of my family all live in the Toronto area. Whenever I go to Canada to visit I always find that the Canadians are fiercely proud of their country and defend it to the end.

The only place in Canada that does not want to be a part of Canada is Quebec. They recently proposed a motion to be become a seperate country within Canada. This motion was turned down. There are a zillion pages on the web regarding this subject.

Nonsense !
Thats ridiculous !
I've never heard that before, ever ! and I've lived in Toronto all my life, and I have travelled all across Canada.
Toronto, businesses and residents and citizens do not despise things in Canada ! How ridiculous ! We are gladly and proudly as much a part of Canada as anywhere else of Canada, and we love Canada and Canadian things ! and we love Americans who respect our country and our sovereignty. They are always welcome, ok !

I have heard the converse though, that the rest of Canada is not so loving of Toronto, maybe because they're tired of hearing about Toronto since its the Canada's most major centre of commerce.

oh, and insecurity??? Poor education??? You kidding ????!!! 'Fess up!, What have you been smoking ??? eh ? !!!

Hello from Toronto:

WE FROM TORONTO ARE PROUD CANADIANS!!
and you have it all wrong! It's not Toronto citizens that want all things American but
THE AMERICANS LIKE ALL THINGS IN TORONTO and keep buying up our city!!

Americans know the wealth that we have here in Toronto.

Hey America just keep buying and keep making Toronto wealthier!!

From Toronto with a smile

Toronto gets a bad rap all the time. What a shame. It is a fabulous city. I was born there and lived there till I was 33. I now live in Calgary. Another fabulous city. I wish people would just not make such judgments about places until you have lived there, had a chance to KNOW the people and don't be so prejudiced. It is sad really to hear people talk badly about any part of our country. I have lived in four provinces and they are all special in their own way. Toronto is large, busy and MAY APPEAR to be unfriendly or whatever it usually get accused of but it is just NOT TRUE. Some people don't like the weather but that is a different story. But the people and the city of Toronto are A1! A proud Canadian who loves the whole country.

?
You got it all wrong. It's the rest of Canada (Ontario at least) that has for years resented T.O. Toronto got the most money, the jobs moved there from other areas forcing many into a lousy commute, they always looked more fashionable, wealthy, privileged, urbane, cultured. Best health care, hospitals closed and doctors moved from smaller centres. I have been forced to live in and commute to T.O. for no good reason I coulld see and I hated the traffic and bustle. There are thousands of beautiful places outside the Big Smoke and some of us love them. We see crime that is alien to us, a girl shot downtown on Boxing Day? Where I live there hasn't been a murder for 30 years. Toronto is part of Canada and we all love it even if secretly, but it's not the whole.

It seems to me that you've got it backwards. It's Canada that doesn't like Toronto. Mind you, not all Canadians despise Toronto. Most are probably indifferent to it, or, at worst, just don't care for it.

I lived in the Toronto area for a few years (never Toronto proper), went to school in Toronto for a year, and worked in Toronto, both the city and suburbs, for a few years. Admittedly, I did have fun, and it was a new experience I won't soon forget. But my wife and I were really happy to move away from it.

The constant hustle, traffic, pollution, high cost of living, and bad attitude of the people living there helped drive us out. About the only thing I sincerely miss about the GTA is public transit. Other than that, I doubt I'll ever go back, other than for a short trip or work-related visit.

i have never heard that and I've lived in and around Toronto for many years.. were perfectly Canadian and proud of it.

Heh?

I think most Canadians hate Toronto.

BlueGirl
Sorry, strongly disagree. Love Canadian, live in TO.

As I was once answer in a question.........

Can-na-da.!..Can-na-da !....Can-na-da ! (Just like an American would do! LOL )

Poor Education? It looks like you are the one with the poor education because you obviously do not know of what you speak.

It's hard to generalize but it seems to me that a lot of people in Toronto are posers... They try to act like Americans although they profess to be superiour to them... All the black guys walk around like gangstas and try to talk with accents lol... If you're in any part of Canada you can pick out a Torontonian a mile away...

CLARABELLE
huh

leer
because the rest of canada hates us (probably due to their own insecurity, though i can't really blame them, coming from buttfu.ck nowhere)

ontario has the highest percentage of schools and students in the country, educating not only residents but people visiting from across canada and the world, so the reason is not educational.
