I'm thinking of moving to Calgary from Montreal. Can anyone give me some reasons as to why Calgary is so great? |

Calgarians are the smartest, friendliest, most entrepreneurial and most neighbourly people you'll ever meet. If you're not busy being envious of them, as many people from eastern Canada are, you'll love them. |

I visited Calgary this summer, and was actually impressed with what a nice city it seemed to be. I was in Canada visiting family in southern Alberta, and went to Calgary overnight. Although in comparison to Montreal, I'm sure Calgary is smaller, I actually thought that it looked like it was big enough to have everything. It seemed to me that it was pretty close in size to Winnipeg, which I really liked when I lived there.
Of course, part of the good experience that I had in Calgary was the fact that I visited a good friend there. But I have a feeling that you'll find Calgary has a lot in common with other Canadian cities. |

There are many reasons:
- Calgary has everything that you can find anywhere else
- Scenery is great, and so many different attractions within 2 hours, including the Rockies
Plenty of employment opportunities (shortage of manpower actually!)
- No sales tax!!!
- Calgary Stampede- Calgary Olympic Park
Downside is the housing is expensive! |

Calgarians are hard partiers like Montrealers, but they are harder working than Montrealers -- and less moan-y as well (although don't get them started on Quebec!). Alberta has no sales tax - not counting the 7.5% Quebec ST will make you feel like a big spender. You can see mountains from all of downtown. Winters are cold, but like Montreal has the "underground city" Calgary has the "15+" - second story walkways over the streets between buildings to stay warm. It is VERY close to 2 major national parks, and a ton of provincial attractions. More parks than Montreal.
That said, I prefer Edmontonians - more laid back, nicer. However, Edmonton is the murder-per-capita capitol of Canada, so maybe they're passive aggressive!
Give Calgary a shot - you won't be homesick, every third person I met there was formerly a Quebecer. |
