Why is Manitoba considered to be part of "Western" Canada??

By the same token, why are Ontario and Quebec called "Central Canada"???? To me, Manitoba and northwestern Ontatrio are Central Canada, east of that is Eastern Canada, and west of that is Western Canada. Anyone else agree???

D.S.:

Good points. In fact, Ohio is well east of Chicago, yet the Americans consider that to be the Midwest as well.

Geographically Manitoba is the middle province if you use the longatude and latitude system as just east of winnipeg on the number one highway is a sign that says middle of Canada and has the exact coordinate.

As for being considered western Canada there are many different reasons for that.
1) farming western manitoba is a farming area
2) its west of Ontario

Now because of their situated location their is the joke that Manitoba can be all three. They can be eastern canada as part of them is east of the middle. They can be central as they are in the middle and can be west as a good portion of the province is in the west.

What it comes down to is the issue and thats where the stance is.

Manitoba IS Central Canada. When divided for the sake of sports teams etc. we (Manitoba) are considered West, I'm thinking the miles from east to west but that is a guess.

It tends to be population based, not geography.

"Central" has 2/3rds of the country's population. It's hard to argue you are east when they are looking west and less than 1/3rd of the population is west of them. Argue East/West should be 50% and they say well you are 1/3rd.

But you think that is bad, it is worse for North/South. What is considered Northern Ontario is silly. I am from BC and Northern BC is way off. By the time you reach the center of the province you are considered to be in the far north of the province. Why? Because most of the BC population lives right on the southern boarder of the province.

I think because canada was settled from the east ontario was once western canada before manitoba was settled by the same token in the USA chicago is mid west that always struck me as odd as it is east of the centre of USA

As a Winnipegger let me say that I have never considered myself to be a Westerner. I live in CENTRAL Canada. Heck, politically we are not even very "western." Most of Western Canada is staunchly Conservative. In terms of federal politics in Manitoba, Winnipeg is traditionally split between the Liberals and NDP with a smattering of Tory support. Rural southern Manitoba is Conservative, while the northern part of the province is, always has been and always will be NDP. Compare that to Alberta and Saskatchewan which are pretty much all Conservative constituencies.

Manitoba is not considered by many.

Until 1870 Manitoba was part of the Northwest Territories.

It was the first province to be recognized as separate from the Territories.

It's early dependence on an agricultural economy and the fact that it is a birthplace of many hockey players make it's association with other western provinces all the more relevant.
