The climate of Vancouver, British Columbia is a moderate oceanic climate (Koppen climate classification Cfb) tempered by the warm Japan Current. The city is also sheltered by the mountains of Vancouver Island, to the west. These influences contribute to making Vancouver the second warmest of Canada's major cities. Although Vancouver is popularly known as a rainy city, only 166 days per year have measurable precipitation on average, and 289 days per year have measurable sunshine. Still, from November until March, it is not uncommon to have 20 consecutive days with some amount of rain. The weather pattern known as the Pineapple Express often brings rainstorms in the winter.
Thunderstorms are rare, with zero to about six occurring through the year, as the Pacific Ocean (and the Strait of Georgia which funnels into the Pacific) does not get warm enough to produce the conditions needed. Sometimes accompanied by hail, they tend to occur more often in fall, winter, and spring than in the summer. Spring and autumn are usually showery and cool. |

Cause of the location along the pacific ocean and the wind currents. The prevaling winds come in to the coast after traveling along the vast pacific (during that time evaperation happens and water collects into clouds over the ocean)....then the clouds empty out over the coast (Vancouver)...seattle too.
It is the currents of wind...
it sucks, i know |

Moisture evaporates off the ocean, carried inland by winds. The clouds must rise over the first mountain range and so clouds rise, cool, drop their moisture - and so it rains! Weather in the second and third mountain trench is much drier. |

Vancouver's reputation is far rainier than the city is. During the summer, there are very few rainy days and often there will be stretches of 40, 50 or 60 days without even a shower. In the winter, there are often several dry spells as well, although November is notorious for being rainy.
The basic reason is the configuration of the mountains, which create a 'bowl' around Vancouver, and the combination of off-shore winds that come in over the water, pick up a load of moisture, hit the mountains and have to drop the water in order to go over the mountains. So the North Shore of Vancouver has much more rain than the Delta or Surrey areas.
The nice thing about the rain is, it keeps the dust down and keeps the streets clean and the grass green. |
