Why is it Great to Be Canadian!?!?!?

I'm doing a project for school. Why do you think it is so great to be Canadian??? Why are Canadians so proud of their country, land, and people? What makes Canada distinct?

Please post any answers you have and your opinions.
And please don't post anything negative.

I am American but Canada is beautiful. I have been from Alaska to Niagra Falls and the beauty is amazing. The Rockies are higher and the west coast around Victoria is wonderful. I went out with a boy from Victoria BC when I was young and sailed around some of the islands. I haven't been to the Great Slave Lake but would like to. The Yukon has Dall Sheep and snow shoe rabbits all kinds of wildlife. I took the ferry back from Alaska once and then drove to Montana through Canada and every inch was nice. I drove from Detroit to Niagara Falls through Canada and it was nice too.

I love Canada and consider it a fine hat for us. My brother married a Canadian and the boy who took me sailing did ask me to marry him. We aren't only neighbors but family.

According to a Recent popular US article on the L.A. Times.

A little question of history. Mordecai Richler (a Canadian novelist and respected writer ) once suggested that what defines Canadians is the fact that we're all, quite literally, losers--and we've never gotten over the fact. Nobody actually actively chose to live here because they really liked the idea. The natives, who were always here, didn't choose to have the European-dominated country of Canada imposed on top of them--but they lost battles, and so became Canadians. Losers. The French in Quebec are Canadians because the British defeated them back in the eighteenth century (and they sure don't like that fact these days). Losers, right? The British-based population of Canada consists of two major groups: United Empire Loyalists, the people in the American colonies who sided with Britain in the war of independence and lost, and so had to flee to Ontario and the Maritimes; and immigrants from England, most obviously people who were doing poorly there, losers at the game of life who decided to set out and try again somewhere else. Losers all again. Throughout this century, people who have immigrated to Canada have tended to be people who have lost elsewhere--lost wars, lost land, etc. Losers yet again. My own ancestors came here because of pogroms in Eastern Europe that destroyed their homes--and would have preferred to go to the US but they couldn't get in, so they settled for Canada, poor losers. We Canadians aren't patriotic because we really only settle for being here, all of us, rather than being delighted by it--and we love to whine about it. Losers for sure, eh?

About 10 years ago a hand drawn map of the Great Lakes Region created by a Portugese Explorer was found in a British archive/ museum . North of the border he entered the Portuguese phrase "Ca' nada" which translates to " Nothing There"

It's a beautiful country consisting of vast magnificent landscapes, spectacular wildlife, and wide open spaces. The people for the most part are tolerant and open-minded with a very laid back attitude and a great sense of humour. The tolerance and acceptance probably stems from the fact that there are immigrants from all over the world here.

Canada has its flaws, as do all countries, but the beauty of the country, the freedom of the people, and the peaceful nature it stands for make it a place worth calling "almost paradise"... I love Canada! :)

Hi i am Canadian and here are some reasons i think Canadians feel so lucky to be born here.

1) great health care system, almost everything is covered i.e paid for by our tax's
2) wonderful education system well funded, and with dedicated teachers
3) most of the time our country focuses on peace not war (at least we are famous as a peace keeping nation)
4) we have a pretty great history (except for the horrible way we treated our First Nations People, the Japanese internment during world war two, and the fact that, like the US, our government is basically disregarding the Kyoto accord)
5) we are a multicultural nation and while the US likes immigrants to come and "behave like Americans" Canada likes immigrants to come and share their cultures with us. As such Canada is a very tolerant country, there is a real mix of ideas and cultures and we are all proud to share this beautiful land, we call ourselves a mixed salad where the US is referred to as a melting pot.
6) the landscape is breathtaking and for the most part there is little pollution
7) most Canadians are friendly and kind
8) we have contributed a lot to the world and if you look up Canadian inventions you might be surprised by a lot of the things that were thought up by Canadians

Canada is distinct for several reasons
1) we are more truly "multicultural" then the us and most other countries as we rely on immigration to replenish our population and ensure there are enough people for all the jobs
2) we are fairly liberal, more so then the US but less so then Scandinavian nations
3) in general the experience of growing up here, or living here is unique and from it you become unique from people of other countries in many ways.

Interesting question, with interesting answers! This website is filled with testimony on how great Canada is, .....and it is....but when asked directly; why is it great to be a Canadian, the answers are weak. Living in a pretty country doesn't make it great, after the question has been up for a whole day, only Julie answered the question appropriately. All G-20 countries have gorgeous landscape, have open door policies for immigrants, all have social welfare and health programs and we are near the top in performance in each of these areas when it comes loonies per capita. When you go to Europe or Asia, these people are friendly and hospitable. Our taxes are lower than many of the G-20 countries, our gasoline and commodities are less expensive. Our land is filled with natural resources, and we have fine universities. One can set a goal in this country, and there is nothing preventing one from attaining it. I disagree with Julie on her diversity stand. Canada has been the melting pot of the world up to 25 years ago. People immigrated here, and melted in. About 25 years ago, it was "the nice thing to do" to welcome people and let them keep their culture, and as she says, "share it". I knew what it was to be a Canadian 25 years ago, but when Peter Mansbridge asked the question of 10 Canadians in a TV special, no one could give an answer. Sort of like the first three answers in this question. When I go down town Windsor, or Toronto, or Edminton it is hard to find a Canadian that talks Canadian. It saddens my heart that we have given our own culture away to make the many feel like they are home in their own land. I am proud to be a Canadian because of what this country has always stood for. Truth, fairness, opportunity, a democratic country run by the people. The opportunity to make a good living with or without an education, with no government prohibitions.
