Why is there so much garbage blowing around the streets of Edmonton?

I visited Edmonton last summer and we went to the infamous "Edmonton Mall". I enjoyed my visit but was somewhat taken back by so much garbage that was blowing around in the streets.

We moved her last summer, and I couldn't believe the trash! Big city mentality I guess. We live right across from a middle school and an afterschool club, so the trash is just insane! People don't seem to care. I personally am embarassed to have anyone from back home come and visit because an otherwise not to bad looking neighbourhood looks horrible with all the trash everywhere. Other than the trash, Edmonton is SOOOO awesome! I love living here, and you can find ANYTHING you want, and some stuff you don't!!!! Wouldn't want to live anywhere else!!!

Unfortunately I think it is because there are a lot of lazy and ignorant people living here, and they don' t take the effort to throw out their trash in a trash bin, recycle, or even consider the implications for their laziness. Far too often I see people open their windows/doors of their vehicles to dump their trash onto the street, as to think it somehow magically 'dissapears'! This also applies to smokers flicking their cigarette butts onto the street/sidewalk. The world is not your ashtray! Pick up after yourselves!

Because a lot of people are jerks who just don't care that they are ruining the nice image Edmonton has been trying so hard to create. They are building beautiful big overpasses as you enter from the south but still GARBAGE everywhere. It is so sad. That is why every spring I join a volunteer road side clean up crew to help preserve our city's gorgeous landscape. I wish others felt the same as me.

Tourists throw their garbage on the street because they've never seen a recycling bin in their own city and don't recognize one when they see it.
