Why is toronto hated by the rest of Canada?

As a life-long Torontonian I have always wondered why this is as well. I have been told that people who don't live in Toronto (also known as the CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE) think we are stuck up and get all kinds of special treatment from the government, etc. Actually, the gov't of Canada tends to ignore Toronto, downplay the financial needs of the city and generally crap all over us. However, we all know what a unifying concept it is for everyone to have someone to hate, you know it kinds of brings people together, lol. So, because it is not politically correct to hate Quebec, everyone can enjoy hating Toronto. But seriously folks, we love you all even though you hate our guts, our filthy potholed roads, our neglected inner suburbs, our under-funded schools, and our bulging homeless shelters - teeming with folks from all over Canada.

A lot of westerners think people from Toronto are stuck up and that the world revolves around them. Also a lot of people from Toronto think they are from New York and think they're better than everyone.

Toronto bashing is one of the favourite pastimes in Canada. This ranks right up there with calling the people in BC "hippies", those folks in Alberta "rednecks", and people from the Rock "newfies".

The actual reason for it is unknown, although I'm sure you'd be able to get a lot of responses from other people. I think it's in part because Torontonians feel kinda special and because they think they're from New York or something they feel the rest of the country needs to stand up and take notice of them.

On the other hand, Toronto (and the GTA) is the one of the economic hearts of the country so there's a reason to feel proud about that.

Before Canada become an united country with a couple of provinces and territories agreeing to unite, Toronto and Quebec City took turns hosting Parliament every four years. Back and forth, back and forth they went, and every four years there was grumbling among the civil servants, their families and governing MP's over the moves between the two cities. So it came to a head where it wasn't working, both cities wanting Parliament in their own vicinity permanently so things got heated. That's probably how the "I hate Toronto" campaign started. Nevertheless a petition was sent to the Queen (Victoria, not Elizabeth at that time), to ask her to choose a permanent location. She picked Ottawa instead.

So how come we never saw a "Let's Hate Ottawa" campaign? It's tax time, so let's get on with it!

I agree with Jenna and Tigga - it's the same thing with any big city .... in France, they think the Parisians are a completely different race!

I don't think Canadians really hate Toronto. I think that is something people all over the world do and say about the largest city in their area - they sometimes love to bash it. It doesn't really mean that they hate the city. When the chips are down they would come to its defense. I love Toronto - and I am part of the "rest of Canada".

News to me that it was. Besides Ontario, I have lived in three other Canadian provinces and I have never heard anyone put down Toronto. The observation that housing there is so expensive one could not afford to live there is common, but that is hardly a put-down or hateful.

i have never heard it but if its true i guess its because there jelous. cant lie but toronto is a huge part of canada and its a real good place. ive lived in toronto my whole life and i love it. i guess if they do do it then people need to stop hatin. cuz no torontonian does tht about any other city!!

Well, I don't really think the we (the urbanites-may not be a word, but you get it) really hate the land of Toronto, it's just the people & terrorosts & cockroaches they bring that scares us but we dont really hate anybody.

People who hate Toronto most likely don't live in Toronto. They are just jealous as Toronto is one of the best places to live in the country.
