In all provinces but Quebec, just about everyone speaks English. (Most but not all speak it as their first language.)
Within Quebec, in Montreal just about everyone who works in the tourist and related industries speaks English (usually not as their first language)--in the airport and hotels for sure; in restaurants and stores downtown you should be able to communicate in English although the staff may not be fully fluent. Normally they don't expect Americans to speak French, and almost certainly not Asians, Eastern Europeans, etc. (They may expect Canadians to speak French.)
In the rest of Quebec, you may or may not find people who speak English. |

Absolutely. Canada has two official languages, English and French, but about 85% of Canadians speak English. Quebec is the province where the most French-speakers live, but a large percentage of them also speak English, so you should have no difficulties at all. |

While most of the Canadians in Quebec are bilingual (it is taught in most schools, along with French), many of them refuse to speak English in their day to day lives. This is likely the result of their strong desire to break away and become their own nation, with French as their official language. They often use it at work, however, switching back and forth on the phone with ease. Do not be surprised if many do not respond kindly to your attempts to communicate in English. Most other parts of Canada, however, are primarily English speaking. |
