You'll manage fine without a car, especially where you'll be staying which is close to bus routes. Lynn Canyon was a good suggestion as was Science World. Go to Lynn Canyon via the Seabus which crosses the harbour so you get a boat ride as part of your bus fare. You could grab a bus out to Horseshoe Bay to have fish and chips at Troll's or ice cream at Baskin Robbins and watch the ferries come and go, and there's a small park there with playground stuff in it. To get there, take the bus that goes out along Marine Drive in West Vancouver(# 259, leaves from downtown along Georgia St) and you can goggle at the million dollar homes along the way, it's a pretty drive. In summer it could pass for the south of France. Sit on the left on the way out for the water views.

The Planetarium(actually, it's the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre) has some very cool shows at all times of day.

You can get the bus to Grouse Mountain too, which has a skytram, always exciting, incredible views if it's not raining. It's likely to be dry, August doesn't usually see much rain.

Yes, you will survive. Downtown Vancouver is set up very well for pedestrians. Also there is lots of mass transit including busses and SkyTrain. A car in downtown Vancouver is a hassle.

well, as they say, you can do well without car.

To save some dough I wouldnt go to Capilino Suspension Bridge. Its very pricey. Alternatively, If you take the seabus from "Canada Place" across the harbour to north Van and bus to "lynn Valley Canyon" it too is beautiful, has a "scary" suspension bridge (every bit as good as Capilino) and waterfalls etc.. but its all FREE. Bring a picnic lunch.

You will be just fine in Vancouver without a car - walking is really easy, transit is excellent, and cabs are easy to find.

For example, both Stanley Park and the Capilano Suspension bridge are in their parks & beaches category so even if you don't know the address, you can find where you want to go and get a few route options.

As for what to visit, especially with kids, you might want to consider Science World and Granville Island, especially the Kid's Market on Granville Island, Playland for amusement park rides, the Vancouver Aquarium. And maybe have a meal at White Spot where the kid's can get Pirate's Paks, I used to love those.

yeah you can survive without a car. the cab drivers are nice, just stay away from "Hastings Street' (tons of scary people)even if ou want to see the harbour lookout tower. Go to granville island, they have a little kids section thats nice. kitsilano beach is nice as well, but its on the other side of the english bay water.

I would rent a car because it is more convenient. But it depends whether you will have free parking at the place you are staying. You have to realize that you would need to take a bus or two to get to Capilano Suspension bridge from downtown. Forget cabs...they are very expensive. If you rent a car you can also see the Van Dusen Botanical Park (really nice). a drive to Whistler or Horseshow Bay would also be possible if you have a car. For a tourist you really need a car to sightsee, considering it rains in Vancouver most of the time.

Capilano Suspension Bridge is one of the few man made attractions in Vancouver. 99% of the beauty of Vancouver is God given. Suspension bridge has one big bridge and several smaller bridges (suspension). Their website is www.capbridge.com.
