It depends on the store. Sometimes they accept them and sometimes they don't.
I live right on the American border and have shopped over there many times. I usually bring cash or if not use my VISA. |

Perdy is right. It really depends on the store. I also live at the Windsor/Detroit border and shop in the states quite often. If you know which stores you're planning on going to, you could always call and ask. |

Yes, but you have to change your bank password so its only four digits long instead of six digits. You can only enter four digit codes in US bank machines. Change it before you leave. |

Absolutely. They are happy to honour your debit card or your credit card. You might have to change your password however, as some machines only take a four-digit sequence. |

When I moved to the US from Canada in 2001, I never had any trouble using my Canadian Debit card or credit cards. But take out cash instead of paying for each thing on it so you do not pay as much in transaction charges. |

I travel to the US all the time and as long the bank machine is part of the same bank machine network as your bank, which 99.9% of them are, then you will be fine. No need to change your bank card pin number, no need to get a special US version of the card, no need to open a US dollar bank account. Just use it as you would here in Canada and you will be fine.
About the only thing you may want to do is ask your bank about raising your daily cash limit only because I did find that depending upon where you visit in the US there are places where there are not many machines or point of sale terminals and you may need to use more cash but you can get that cash at a standard bank machine when you see one.
I've even used my Canadian (Scotiabank) card in Greece, Spain, Poland and India with no problems at all. As long as you have money in the account and the machine is part of the "Plus" or "Cirrus" system, or any of the other systems who's logos you see on the back of your bank card you will have no problems. |

Of course it will work, I don't know where those other people got their information. And my PIN number is 9 digits long, and there is NO problem. There will be a fee, usually around $1.50. One thing NOT to do, however, is to use your debit card for purchases. There is a fee ranging from $3.00 to $5.00 US for each purchase using your card (I found out the hard way). How do I know? Because I'm a US citizen, permanent resident in Canada and travel to the states for pleasure, business, and to see my family at least 5 times a year. Occasionally my card has not been accepted - the few times that happened, I simply walked across the street to the next bank. To be sure check your card on the back for the "Interac" or "Plus" logo. The ATM machines usually post which ones they accept. Again, my debit card has not been accepted maybe 3 times out of 100. |
