Don't bother living in Toronto, Scarbourgh or The Beaches...it's just too expensive.
Other towns east of Toronto such as: Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, Whitby, Bomanville, Hampton are less expensive to purchase homes. If I were to pick a place to live of the towns I've listed, I would live in Ajax, Whitby and Bomanville or Hampton.
I was raised in Ajax for 29 years, and it quite safe to live, Whitby as well. Oshawa has slightly more crime in their downtown core. There is more crime as the criminals move out to cheaper places to live.
It is one huge urban jungle from Toronto out past Bomanville, which is approximately 45-1hour East of Toronto. Most people East of the city drive in to work. This can take from 1hr up to 2 hours, depending on the time you leave to work. The drive back is even worse. There is gridlock everywhere and at almost anytime these days.
More and more people are moving out to the urban areas and these towns are turning into towns of strip malls, housing communities, and you require a car to maneuver yourself around town as the bus system connecting these towns can take longer to travel. They do have the GO-Bus system that takes you to key areas connecting the towns. There is also the GO-train which will take you into the city, taking approximately 45min to Union Station (Toronto Hub Station beside the CN Tower) from Ajax . However, local public tranportation is less than desirable.
As I've never owned a home while living in Ajax, I can't tell you anything about property taxes, and taxes in general.
I can tell you: There is a GST (Goods & Services tax) 6% across Canada, then each province has their own tax on top of that, Ontario adds their own tax PST (Provincial Sales Tax) 8%.
The highway that connects Toronto to East is getting more and more congested, however, the highway system itself is fantastic to drive.
The weather can be a bit much for some to adjust too. There is a hot and humid season, where the temperature can feel up to 40 degrees and you're soaked with sweat. The winter they have a wind chill where it can feel much colder. The summer can be quite dreadful as more and more pollution comes into play, there are more and more smog alerts where the elderly, and those with respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors.
Hopefully this helps you a little bit. |

Have you ever considered the outskirts of Moncton, New Brunswick? Places like Hillsborough, Port Elgin etc. Real Estate is cheap and views are fantastic!Check out mls.ca or homesincanada.ca |

Move to Aurora, Ontario. It's a great family oriented town to live in. There lots to do, it has all the major neccesities and its half an hour away from big cities like Toronto and Vaughn. |

British Columbia is a beautiful province, with everything you could possibly want ... ocean, mountains, lakes, desert, farming areas, cities, small towns, great schools and universities...
Go to www.mls.ca to see real estate prices from any city in Canada. If you find an area you're interested in, then Google it and learn more. Canada is a huge country, so if you aren't tied to Ontario for employment reasons, then explore all the options from the Atlantic to the Pacific. |

If I'm not mistaken, all of those areas are near Toronto. I went to Oshawa for an OHL game once, and I really liked it. The people are really friendly and it has a nice, small city atmosphere. If you're from the northern US, you won't have trouble adapting to living in Canada, as the cultures are similar, and the Great Lakes region is wonderful (I live by Erie). |

Try looking these places up on the internet. You can try ask.com and see what you come up with. Where there's a will, there's a way. If you have internet, you can find a lot more there than you can elsewhere. There are some provinces, like British Columbia, who will actually give you money for moving there. They want to increase the population. |

Move to London (Ontario, of course). Only 2 hours from Toronto, lots of employment opportunities but FAR less expensive to live. Great city, not too big, not too small. About 350,000 people. |

My best suggestion is rent a place near wherever you are working first and then explore the cities you mentioned.
If safety is you primary concern, you can check out Mississauga. here is an article about it being one of the safest cities in Canada seven years running.http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/business;jsessionid=PFC1BKEIWCAWVTRPH3XT44WOF25W2PW0?paf_gear_id=9700020&itemId=85100078 |
