Would Canadians trade away Quebec and the Maritimes for the US state of California? |
Canadian actress Pamela Anderson, who was born on Canada Day, spends a whole lot of time in Hollywood, California, but would never trade being Canadian for anything.
Now you could have Tim Hortons and Tony Romas and Poutine cafes all along the Pacific Coastline!
One more thing, Los Angeles, California used to have 2 NFL football teams and now they have 0 ANYWAY! The Rams moved to Saint Louis and the Raiders moved to Oakland. So maybe it's time they have a CFL team to beat out the Saskatchewan Roughriders!
Don't you love those Grey Cup Champions? Isn't it worth adding CFL teams in California?
One last problem you may experience. Since Los Angeles will now be part of the new PROVINCE of California AND Canada? Its postal address will be Los Angeles, CA, CA. Confusing?
In exchange, the USA will just LOVE the STATE of Quebec.
Additional Details Actually, Justin W. according to mapquest, the US AND Canada generally use 2-letter state/province abbreviations but 3 is acceptable.
As follows:
BC = British Columbia
AB = Alberta
SK = Saskatchewan
MB = Manitoba
ON = Ontario
QC = Quebec
PE = Prince Edward Island
NB = New Brunswick
NS = Nova Scotia
NL = Newfoundland & Labrador
NU = Nunavut
NT = Northwest Territory
YT = Yukon Territory

No Way i would want California. i was born and raised in Quebec. now i live in Alberta. I love being canadian and im proud of it. Quebec is not for sale nor are the maritimes or any other provinces. Some years ago i was in Los Angeles for business. its a nice place but way too polluted and way to many people. yes you have the pacific coast. we do too and we have 2 others coasts. We have a culture, an heritage that is very prescious to us. Canada comes has country and it can not be divided. |

Never. There is no way on earth I'd want California. Have no interest in it whatsoever. We'll keep Canada the way it is thanks. |

No. I have no interest in California whatsoever, nor do I care for Hollywood. I love Canada the way it is, especially including Quebec and the Maritime Provinces. Why would we want your LA gangs, drug wars, and fake atmosphere? The answer? We wouldn't! The goings on in Hollywood are only good for a laugh.
* I used to enjoy your questions, but now they are hovering on the ridiculous side of the scale. |

Never ever ever! Sure Quebec wants to seperate from Canada and the Maritimes are kind of small, but that is where our history is! California would be nice to have, but it doesn't really fit in with the rest of Canada. It is way too warm in the winter. Sorry, but no trade.
That would be like asking the US. to trade New York and Texas for Nunavut. It would never happen!
These are the proper abbreviations for the provinces and territories:
British Columbia: BC
Alberta: AB or Alta.
Saskatchewan: SK, SSK, Sask, or SKWN
Manitoba: MB. or Man.
Ontario: ON, or Ont.
Quebec: PQ, QC, or Que.
New Brunswick: NB
Nova Scotia: NS
Prince Edward Island: PE, P.E.I., or P.E. Island
Newfoundland and Labrador: NL, Nfld, NF, LB
Yukon Territory: YT or YK
Northwest Territories: NT or N.W.T.
Nunavut: NU.
Edit: Sorry about the mistake. |

It is unrealistic to expect the USA to give up California in exchange for Quebec and the Maritimes. California is not adjacent to Canada, so logistically it would be a headache to accomodate things like domestic mail unless USA also gave us Oregon and Washington state.
The only way this makes senes is if Quebec separatists got their way and Quebec became a separate nation. Since they would now have control of the St. Laurence Seaway, if they were to raise tariffs and/or blockade the canals and locks, both US and Canada would likely both agree to invade, with everything NORTH of the seaway remaining part of Canada, and everything SOUTH (Eastern townships, Gaspe, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) being annexed by the USA. And in exchange for our agreement to give up New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the US might agree to hand over Alaska to Canada.
It would make a great book about a Canadian civil war in the 21st century, but in reality, I don't see either scenarios (yours or mine) ever happening. |

Perhaps they'd want a warranty to address earthquake risk.
That said, if you made this offer I think they'd have Nunavut.

No. One thing Canada loves more than anything else is our Heritage. You'd be asking us to get rid of our most Heritage filled lands for crap. It's not a fair trade.
The posting address won't confuse us either. One thing you didn't manage to look up on wikipedia is we use 3 characters to describe our provinces and territories unless it's a two or three word name. Ontario is Ont, not On. Saskatchewan is Sas, not Sa. The Two letter provinces are NB, BC, NS, NT, YT, NL (Newfoundland and Labrador)
Besides, we don't get Quebec, Quebec, Canada confused.. |

How about this deal instead. Since there already is an Alaskan Independence Party that wants to have Alaska split with the United States and join Canada, we could trade Quebec for Alaska. That way the Americans can put up with all the whining for Quebec and Canadian Federal Parties wouldn't have to keep sucking up to Quebec for votes anymore. And in a federal election the western provinces' votes would count for more in a federal election. I don't think we need California because we already have British Columbia also known as California North. But if that did happen then Governator Arnie could legally smoke Cuban cigars in California instead of coming here to do that. BTW, I think Arnie is a better politician and leader than old Cement Head or as I called him "Thick as a Brick" Mike Harris ever was. |

There are many people in Alberta that would happily pay to have Quebec separate. Most of them would also like Alberta and BC to break off and form their own country too.
California would be nice too since we gave up on annexing that tropical island country. I think Buffalo had a CFL team and won the Grey Cup. |
