The plan is that sometime next year, all border crossing will require a passport. So if you need one will depend on when next year you travel. It was originally set to happen in early January. But there have been changes because of demand for passports. So the dates aren't set in stone. The current date is now next summer. But you should apply for your passport soon just to plan ahead.

If you are flying you already must have a passport.

If you are a Canadian citizen (but not a US or Mexican one, with dual citizenship), you should ALREADY have a valid passport. You need it to obtain (and maintain) your permanent residency.

If you have dual citizenship (i.e. US and Canada), then see the following:

As of 01 January 2007 - if traveling by air INTO the US (which also means if leaving the US on a round-trip ticket), the only acceptable identification is a valid passport.

Before 31 December 2007 - if traveling by land or sea INTO the US (again, also outbound, if a round-trip ticket), must have proof of citizenship (birth certificate, passport, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (passport, US or Canada driver's license, or military ID).

After 01 January 2008, must have passport to travel INTO US (or out, on round trip ticket) regardless of means of transportation.

If not a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico - to ENTER US (or Canada, or Mexico), must have valid passport regardless of means of transport.

If they are US citizens, they just need a passport. Apply now so you will have them in time. If they are not US citizens, contact your closet Canadian embassy.

If you have not given up your citizenship then no, you do not need a passport although you should have your birth certificate and photo ID. A passport though is a good idea. If your husband and child are coming back to live, and are US Citizens, they will need to go through immigration procedures. I suggest you contact the nearest Canadian Consulate office and go over the information required with them.

Please be more specific. Are you a Canadian citizen? Are your husband and child Canadian citizens? You say you are from Canada, so I guess you are either a citizen or a permanent resident. In either case, if your family members are not Canadian citizens you can apply to sponsor them. See the links below. If you are arriving from the US you probably won't need a passport, but you will need some sort or proof of citizenship like a birth certificate. Questions: How did you leave the country without a passport? How did you get into your current country of residence?

If you are traveling by air you will need a passport, the whole family. If driving into Canada, you will need some form of ID, your Canadian citizenship card and your Drivers License, if your Canadian citizenship card doesn't have a picture on it. Bring the childs canadian citizenship card, if your Canadians.
