Would my boyfriend get in trouble for lying on how he met his girlfriend to a customs/immigration agent?

People are probably getting tired of hearing this asked, I just want to make sure nothing happens and my boyfriend is still worrying about it. He keeps saying "lying to a federal agent is a serious offense", I tell him not about stuff like how you met your gf and so on.

So now hes worried that he'll run into the same officer and get asked the same questions, he doesn't know what he should say. The story he made up could be checked on to see if hes lying, or if he tells the truth the officer would realize he lied last time. This is assuming the officer even remembers, which I highly doubt. So what should he tell the officer, if he by somehow by some freak chance gets the same one and he remembers? Just tell the truth? And would he get in trouble for lying about how he met his g/f? Thanks for everyones replies, they've been helpful and appreciated.

Guess to better explain:

He came to visit me and had never been hassled before, so the officer asked how he met me and he made up a story since he actually met me online. He thought they wouldn't let him into Canada to see me if he told them he met me online. Hes from the US.

never lie to a customs officer. People are bad liars and if any hint of a small lie they then wonder how much of what you said is a lie, or what you are hiding. If caught and there was an incident, that might get flagged on the computer. But he will not likely 1) get the same officer unless he crosses a small crossing regularly, 2) wont get the same question 3) wont have someone remember the details.

He should just be sure to have ties back home as signs he is visiting you then returning home. Like work/school, and a house/apartment.

Why the big fuss? What ever they ask answer. It's just that simple.

lots of people meet online now...it's really no big deal.....and the immigration officer deals with thousands of people a week and would not remember him. Unless he was taken aside and questioned his answers would not have been recorded.

Just tell the truth in the future.

Usually they ask chit-chatty questions to get a feel of how nervous you are and they look for signs that you might be lying, etc.
If he's going to look really nervous just being asked easy questions, it might be best to just decide to tell the truth, and hope you don't get asked that question. If you act really nervous, you're way more likely to get searched, etc.

Choqs
I doubt they give a rat's behind how you met, but he shouldn't have lied.

Although it is an offense to knowingly give a wrong answer in this case it will probably not create any serious consequences. As mentioned in a prvious answer, unless it is a small border crossing the odds of getting the same officer are slim. Even if he did, unless he travels frequently across to see you the odds of the officer remembering him and his answer to the question, or even the question itself, is slim.

I am assuming that he and you have got together at least several times since you first met online. If so then the truth should be more than sufficient. It is likely he will be asked a similar question again since he will be asked why he is visiting Canada.

The irony is that he made up some crazy story when there really was no need for it. Just tell the truth. There's a lot less that you'll need to remember.
