Would should a 26 year old from Alabama expect if moving to Vancouver BC for the summer?

I might be taking a job there next summer that coincides with my masters in counseling. Are we talking possible culture shock? Haha. I'm a city girl through and through, and I'm ready to get out of the South!
Additional Details
for the record...Alabama is not equivalent to a redneck's paradise. haha. the stereotype is there...i get it, but c'mon! thanks for all the answers thus far. keep 'em coming.

You can expect blue skies, cooler weather, gorgeous greenery and VERY intelligent and interesting people who will make you wonder how you survived living amongst the same stagnant thought processes you may have grown up with.

You will LOVE IT.

In B.C., you'll notice a great deal of Chinese. You might also be surprised at how near the mountains are, and how quickly you can get there.

Vancouver is a beautiful city. Spend a weekend at Victoria too. The ferry ride is wonderful. Have a great summer.

You can expect a raelly alive city in downtown but the suberbs and other parts of Vancouver to be dead after 10PM in the summer. In the winter it'll be dead after 5PM. Downtown is great for people like you. Great nightlife, close to beach and recreation, and beautiful views. The weather in summer should go around 20-30C but usually not more than that. Right now it hasn't started to get warm that much yet. I turned up the heater 2 nights ago in our basement...
You can expect huge shopping districts and excellent veriaty of restaurants.. Food prices are slightly lower than other Canadian cities, specially if you buy daily stuff from small chinese/Indian stores.. Gass is more expensive than Toronto and other cities and so is used cars. It's a better idea just to use the public transportation system. Skytrain goes from downtown Eastwards into two direction and there will be a southbound direction completed in 2009 to Airport.
Overal, you'll enjoy a summer here, but if you plan to stay for the winter, just bring an umbrella because it might just be raining 25 days of the month. Good luck

No, you won't have any culture shock, okay, well maybe a little but probably a pleasant one. Vancouver is very much like Seattle in terms of climate, general atmosphere and the number of coffee bars around town.

If you have the "Ugly American" attitude you'll hate it. But then those kind hate everything that isn't "the way it is back home in _______"

Vancouver is greener and cleaner than most, partly because it rains a lot.

Vancouver was always a 'melting pot' and now because in part to it's location on the west coast it has a very large Asian population.

You can spend a lot of money shopping on Robson St or go find Walmart in the burbs.

Housing is expensive but not near as bad as other places. The people and the weather are friendlier than the big cities in the east.

well i went through the same thing except i moved to pennsylvania from alabama. i moved here when i was 9 and life is so much different than bama. it has its ups and downs about here but all and all i guess i like it just a bit more. i got picked on a little cause of my accent and it was hard to make friends but it all turned out for the better cause now i have a lot of friends, i lost my accent completely, and it made me immune to culture shock! i still visit home in alabama about twice a year though! thats all im gonna say cause i would be here all day telling you how much different it is here! i wouldnt rather be in any other place except maybe tuscaloosa, ROLLLLLLLLL TIDE ROLLLLLLLL!!!!!

I think it will be great experience.I spent summer there in 2006.The most important thing is-Do not compare it with your home.Try to be open minded, and meet and get to know people. As everywhere you will find extremely nice people and mean as well. But you are coming at best time of year! You can go swimming in the morning and explore mountains in the evening. You can bike, skate whatever you want to...shopping and parties are great too.Getting job is not big problem.Be open, nice and people will be the same.Have a Time of your life!

Its a lot cooler weather and when they say rain, its not like the south. Its more of a constant sprinkle. Vancouver is a huge city that is no different from lets say Birmingham for you. Its just beautiful out there, you may never want to come back. Just EXPECT everything to cost about 25% more than in the states.

well i moved from seattle to kentucky and that was a huge culture shock and i've been more down south and i've been to vancouver and yes your in for a culture shock, i think you'll like it tho'

1. There is no humidex here. You won't just stand and sweat anymore.
2. Lack of mosquitoes. I'd say 90 % of the homes in Vancouver don't bother with screens on their doors/windows.
3. It's a lot cooler here than in the south.
4. The city is much more culturally diverse than in the south. Expect to see a lot of different ethnic foods, restaurants, languages and people.
5. The mountains are breathtaking!!
