I think you have to make the drive at least once in your life just to appreciate how truly large and beautiful this country is. I've done it a few times.
My crazy cousins do it in a day but I like to take my time & stop & enjoy every little land mark & walk along every beach on Lake Superior. |

in June I would drive; while the best part of the route will be from Toronto to Thunder Bay - incredible nature in Northern Ontario - it will then get a bit boring until you hit Calgary. But even the prairies have their beauty.
Once in Calgary, you must go on at least to lake Louise, even if it's just a day trip.
Count on at least four or five days driving, especially if you stop along the route and sometimes get off the beaten track. |

If you are interested in seeing the country, drive. If you want to get to Calgary and spend time there for something specific, then fly. Either way is good. |

It depends what you're in it for. If you love road trips and scenery and stuff than the drive itself becomes a vacation, but if all you do on the road is dream of getting to the destination than you'll regret the drive during the many monotonous legs of the journy. I took a very liesurely drive and camped my way from Toronto to Victoria, going up around the lakes in Ontario (best part of the drive until BC) and through the prairies, dipping as far south as the Grasslands of Saskatchewan but not into the states. Calgary itself is quite nice if you ignore the drunks and scuzziness, but there's soooo much to see in Canada. I love road trips though so this biases my opinion. |

I drove across Canada 4 times in my life. I am glad I did it (at least once) we have a beautiful country but.....we had 1 month vacation and it took us 5 days from Alberta to New-Brunswick. Ontario is very big, took us like 3 days to cross it and Saskatchewan is very long as well. If I only had a 2 week vacation I don't think I'd like to spend 3/4 of it driving back and forth. |

flying definitely...
unless you know how to be occupied for 34 odd hours in a car... (and can sit for that long, too)... not to mention, driving takes off, at least 4 days of your two weeks and when traveling, it is so much nicer to be able to stay in one place (on vacation) for as long as possible
flying is a lot shorter and you don't really have to stay awake for the flight and don't have to pay attention... for me, at least, i can read/write on the plane but can't read/write in the car, so i have a lot more options to keep myself occupied in the plane as well... |

Fly. The lakehead route is a long boring drive. If you go that way, you will soon regret not taking the much faster routing available going through Chicago. And if you drive, you will end up spending well over half your vacation on the road and will not have enough time to enjoy the sights of the West. A drive that long needs at least 2 days of rest afterwards.
I drove from LA to West Virginia this last summer and it was a hard 4 days on the road. And it was on freeways and there was stuff to see instead of just endless prairie and trees.

If you want to drive across the second biggest country in the world, from Calgary to Toronto... well, just buy a ticket for a WestJet to take you to YYC. |
