Oh my ......I'm not trying to a b*tch here but why on earth would your family want to move to Puerto Rico?
I just moved out of there myself. The public education in P.R. sucks big time (and private education is overpriced). Please try not loose interest in school because of this. Don't worry about you spanish..you will become more fluent in it in a matter of months.
Edit-
In regards to Mr. Cool Guy's post
No you don't have to listen to me (read in this case)..but then again someone who has never lived outside the island really doesn't know what they are missing. I am a mother of two kids ( a pre-teen and a 6 year old) and I had to go trough many hardships while I had my kids enrolled in their schools.
I mean how much can we say about a goverment who chooses to close schools when they have so called deficits?
There are no security guards on most schools, no air conditioner ( but for some reason the principal always has one), no libraries...and in most cases not even toilet paper in the bathrooms.
My daughter use to have to correct her english teacher all the time because this lady didn't even know how to spell.
Puertoricans live in denial of this and it makes me sad.
You are very young and so you will have time to experience these things for yourself. As I said, don't loose interest in school, read as much as you can and try to make the best of it.
And yeah guys will dig you...and your gringa accent. I wish you luck no matter where you move to. |

I think that once you are there and settled in, you will not ever want to move back to the states. |

Seriously, even though you might not be fluent, most people dearly love to hear someone at least try to speak their language. It shows a certain respect for them by not having them have to speak yours. If you make a mistake, laugh at yourself and all will be well. By the way, guys will fall all over you offering tutoring services. Don't worry, English is spoken in P.R. Enjoy yourself, many would say that you are moving to paradise. Buena suerte, senorita. |

First of all Welcome to you and your family, Bienvenidos. Here school is like in the States, you will change from one room to another for classes. All the students wear uniforms. Depending on the school, depends on the colors. The uniform has many advantages, you save on clothes, you won't have to worry what to wear everyday, and you are identified with your school by the color of the uniform.
As for your Spanish, don't worry. Many teacher speak English and of course all classes are in Spanish except for the English class of course. Many schools have computers and other nice things. About the guys. My advise is not to jump to fast. Just take your time. Study first, get yourself into your studies and in time you can maybe meet a nice guy. You are young yet with a lot of life ahead of you. As for College, they do give entrance exams, but don't worry, because any way you will start with the basics. In English you can take the advanced course, but in no way it will affect your collage entrance. Some here are the University of Puerto Rico, Sagrado Corazon (Sacred Heart University expensive), University of Turabo, InterAmerican University, University of Phoenix, just to mention a few. The University of Puerto Rico is nice. It is historical and the credits a still a bit cheaper than the rest. They have a grand library with all material available. I do not study there but I go because I am on a geneology quest and I meet with the proffesor in Historical Archives to pull out the old Census documents to search. It is a nice place to study. Turabo is in the town of Gurabo near Caguas. It is a bit expensive and they too are nice. Sagrado Corazon or Sacred Heart is nice. I studied there, but it is expensive. But what I liked about it is the enviroment, the library which is huge and the proffesors. Also there are Colleges that offer courses in beauty, mechanics, chefs. the list is long and you have many choices.
Do not worry about school because with just living here you can pick up the Spanish fast. When I first came here I was in the 5th grade and with no Spanish at all, but that was back in the late 60's and every one was nice to me and helped me learn Spanish, my friends taught me Spanish and in school the teachers were so wonderful to me. Today, the teachers will be glad to help you and because your language is English that is a plus in the class because you will be able to help out other students, I know I was an English teacher here for 14 years and I had students in my years whom knew no Spanish at all and they did very well and picked up fast. and I know you will too. So don't worry and enjoy your time here. |

Don't worry about your Spanish, there is a lot of young persons who speak English, When I was your age I had a boyfriend that did not speak Spanish. You will learn and there is a lot of bilingual school in PR. Relax and enjoy our Island. |

You'll be fine, I think the English is a super plus for school, so don't worry! |

listen Puerto Rico have two official language like you are viewing in me. english and spanish. im 17 right now. when you start in pre school here you start with the english. about 75 to 80 percent people here are bilingual. there also are many bilingual school. i am in one and its excelent. Thomas Alva Edison School in Caguas, PR. abput 25 minutes from San Juan. here we use the two language at equal. the movies in cinemas are in english with spanish subtitles. there also a newspaper in english. dont preocupate. you will learn it. |
|

Nice Day!
 |
You will be fine!
9Th grade in PR is part of Middle School, so you will have a year before you go to High School if that is one of your worries.
About your Spanish, just tell them to speak to you slowly, you will catch up faster than you think! I don't think you will offend anyone, but just be careful with whom are your friends.
It will not affect your college application if you keep up the next years and do well on the college board exam they give you when you are HS Senior. |

As Billy wrote. Don't be concerned about your Spanish. Spanish speakers will laugh with you not at you remember too, the more you use it the faster your fluency will come. Enjoy and learn in Puerto Rico Señorita. |

If you have trouble understanding and you end in a public school with little or no bilingual program that will impact your grades. If going to a billingual school or private school you will be doing better I think. If you pick up the spanish and concentrate in the studies in the later high school years, you will be fine for university.
Offend teenagers due to good english but so-so spanish? Nah. Many guys will find you interesting due to you were living in the USA. Shy? I think that could slow the friendship development process a little. |

Just by being in the hambiente, you will catch on to the language. One of my friend went to visit, and he didn't know any spanish at all. But he enjoyed his trip alot, learned some words, and he wishes he could go back.
You're lucky. I have famliy over there. And if I could move, I would. Anyway, Puerto Ricans are really friendly people. So don't worry. : ) |
