Ackee in Jamiaca? |
How much is a can of ackee in Jamiaca? They are around 15 us her in ny. Also is it ok to bring cans back into the US?
Additional Details
I'm staying in a resort and there is no freezer in the room. That is how we have done it in the past. |

There are canned ackees available for export, but the rules vary every now and then about whether or not they are allowed into the USA. Last thing i heard was yes.
Either way, you can try one of the big supermarkets. They should have canned ackee. Hide the cans in your luggage and you will be fine.
The other option is to prepare the ackee yourself. I think its about JA$200 in the markets. Boil it, freeze it and bag it, then hide it in your luggage. In this case US customs will almost definately not care if you have it in your luggage, but hide it anyway.
If you here in Jamaica, you really dont need to buy canned ackee, but if you are in a rush or don't have the facilities to have it cooked for you, then i guess the cans would have to do! |

Ah don't know a soul who buy ackee ina can in Jamaica , we buy it by de dozen, or we beg we neighbour ah few.
I always have some pre-cook, then when cool, place in zip-lock bags then frozen, easier an safer to carry. |

Mi pick ackee off mi ackee tree and bring it up. You put it in a zip lock bag and freeze it in the freezer and then bring it up.

its ok to take back ackee to the US - my family does it all the time. However ackees grows on trees all around in jamaica - there is even one loaded across the street from my house now.
freezing it is your best bet - ackee is poisonous and has to be prepared properly like boiling it b 4 freezing it - its the only way. |

you cant take ackee here unless its frozen and wrapped in old newspaper. If its not frozen it will go bad or customs will throw it out.
Canned ackee is disgusting so unless I'm getting it from JA I'm not eating it! |
