Acquiring transportation in Jamaica? |
My girlfiend and I are planning to spend three months in Jamaica (Oct -Jan '09). We will mostly be staying in MoBay and want to be able to get around the island at will. Renting a car seems to be way too expensive. Our other option was to buy a car cheap ($2000) and try to sell it back when we're ready to leave, but is it worth it financially and practically? Would we need Jamaican licenses/registrations? |

I agree with Lala but in saying that when I'm in Jamaica I usually rent a car from DOUGLAS CAR RENTALS owned by Lloyd and Rick Douglas who are based in Montego Bay. I use them because they are way cheaper than the regular car rental hire places which are a real rip off. The cars are not brand new but they are in top condition (I never had a breakdown and I've used them a number of times in the last six years and travelled extensively across the island). The price includes insurance. The numbers are (876) 955-4992, 360-1763, 844-7475.
The fact that you are spending three months may mean that the bill is quite steep even if renting from the Douglas' is cheaper. You may want to follow Lala's advice and hire a driver when you need to and use taxis for short journeys. It's not the convenience of having a car but it may work out cheaper over three months. |

I wouldn't advise you to purchase a car. USD2000 is equivalent to JMD176,000 certainly not enough to purchase a reliable car in Jamaica. The average for a second hand reliable car would range from as low as JMD300,000 upwards. There are individuals who hire their personal cars at a daily rate much cheaper that the car rental companies. You may also hire taxis to make short trips. |

Renting is out it will cost way too much @$2000 you will get a car you will need your jamaican licenses/registration yes.i would say buy and sell back when you are leaving. |

Car rental are expensive in Jamaica, and they drive on the left side.
Taxis are readily available and might be the best way to get around. FInd someone with a nice vehicle and hire them for a day, or a few days. The price can be negotiated.
Buying seems like a hassle. What if you can't sell it when you are leaving?
You can rent from this guy. I have rented from him and he is reliable.

The cost is around 300 a week. |

Yes, renting isn't practical. At $500 per week, you would spend $6000 for 3 months ! So if you bought a cheap car like you say @ $2000 and left it there WITHOUT selling it, your still better off.
Buying a car is the best idea, although mopeds can be bought for $700 brand new. What you get for $2000 will be a '95 or older car, and will not be fancy. Selling before you leave is the tricky part, unless you sell at half price & know you still made out.
You'll need insurance ( about $200-$300 ) and a registration ( about $100 ) and a fitness ( vehicle inspection $60 ). Your drivers license will work in Jamaica.

If you are gonna be in Jamaica for that period, it would certainly be a smart move to have an exclusive transportation, but i should be real with you.
If you come to Jamaica and buy a car for US$2000, you will find that you may spend more to keep that car going for the period you will be here. and yes you would need to do registration, the requisite licenses etc. So I would say that would be certainly a waste of time. Ane most of all, I can tell you that doing those kind of businesses in Jamaica is normally very stressful..
I could offer you some assistance if you so desire. I am in the field of Hospitality, Tourism & Events Management. It's easy for me to get you an exclusive transportation at a cost im sure you can afford. I also have a Travel & Leisure Club here where i assist returning residents, tourists and others in facilitating their desires at a reasonable and very affordable cost.
If you so desire I could send you referrals, rates, pictures etc so you can see how legitimate i am.
you can email me at clubadventurejamaica @ yahoo or clubadventureja @ cwjamaica.com |
