I think uniforms put everyone on an equal footing. I wore uniforms and my girls don't wear any now. Getting ready for school was no less exciting for me getting a new uniform than it is for my girls to get new clothes. The big difference is that my mother didn't have to shell out hundreds of dollars for me to look cool! I don't buy the argument that uniforms take away individuality. Kids have their own personality despite what they wear. Given the choice I would wear uniforms. |

I live in NYC and school uniform is an "option" for the kids here. I don't like it, because my 11yr old "was" part of the popular crowd in public school and she didn't wear the uniform that I spent money on. She would wear what she wanted to wear and we had lots, lots, lots fights about it. To solve the problem, I took her out of public school and am sending her private school, this way she must wear uniform.
I was bought up w/uniforms. I went to St. Rose's in POS and Belmont Jr. Sec. and I didn't have a problem w/it because everyone wore it. They're a no reinforcements here in the city schools, the kids feel that they have more control over what they wear. |

when I was a kid ordinary clothes would have been my answer!
But now looking at it from my adult perspective, Uniforms are best!
*Wearing a uniform distinguish the student form other students or public
*Poorer kids - won't have to worry about buying clothes to fit into the crowd or be ashamed of what they are wearing
*Parents won't have to spend more money on clothing - remember school is five days per week! High shopping bills!
*Keeps kids in line too - and teaches them how to dress - I hated to wear a tie, but now I can tie a tie with ease! |

Coming from the broke parent of three perspective I am in full agreement with having kids wear uniforms. Not only is it easier financially on the parents but as Stevie said it is a great equalizer and that benefits both the "haves" and the "have nots". These kids go through so much more than we did in our day. Even if you weren't "cool" back in our day, yuh take yuh lil calpet as yuh pass by and yuh go yuh way. These children today are KILLING each other over.....stuff. If everyone is in uniform, it drastically cuts down on that kind of thing. I sorry, I prefer protect my children's lives than their individuality. |

i think uniforms are they way to go, if anything they are economic. But i really think that a uniform has a certain respect. I cant explain it. But anyway, elemetary and high school should be uniformed, it helps cut down on "keepin up with the joneses" |

well i just graduated high school and although I hated the uniform and it was hot it makes better sense to wear uniform cuz its cheaper, everybody dresses appropriately all the time (cuz u can just imagine the tings some poeople woulda wear) and when you go out wid u school frenz you look different than at school. |

Yeah boy, ah go go with de uniforms eh. Well when ah used to go to Newtown Girls in Trinidad I used to hate those stupid green uniforms with ribbons and all that crap and every Monday mornin dey findin some way to make money, but now i could wear meh own clothes to school but ah gettin real tired of it. Tuh tell yuh de truth, is really to much distraction goin on without the school unifirorms so i think i go rather go with the uniforms. but they doh have to ova do it like dem in trinidad talkin about lilly white ribbons and lilly white socks and shoes and lilly this and that, had me scrubbin my shoes every weekend, killin out de poor kids. yuh mean to say de damn ribbons ca stay white forever, it must turn colour cause a de grease in yuh hair! *steups* I used to get real feddup a dem but now i come to realize that it really help up us. we eh ha to tink bout who wearing what, and dress code (which no one listens to) and who dyin dey hair red and all kind a telaylay. Sometimes in Trinidad ah used to say that these Americans have it to nice, dey want a damn lash. But anyway, lemme go back to what i was doin. dis yahoo answers ting real killin meh boy. I ca resist it man. |

Here nah juicyp,ah honestly believe in wearing uniform cuz it brings about a certain level of respect and equity.
Yeah ah use to complain bout wearin ah uniform in secondary school but now ah realize dat it was because of dese said uniform dat it had equity and unity in de school.
And as you stated it it gives you a sense of pride and belongness[dy is ah word] when you go to any sporting event and see yuh school color in de stands.

Think of it this way....There's a lot of peer pressure in schools, especially amongst teenagers. When everyone wears the same uniform they are viewed as equals. However, if children have to go to school with their own clothes, things can get pretty difficult if they wear something that is out of style. Teenagers can be very cruel and believe it or not, a child may be teased mercilessly merely because he/she cannot afford all the latest styles. Also, in a country like Trinidad and Tobago where even clothes can be ridiculously expensive, how in the world can parents possibly buy a virtually endless supply of clothes? With a uniform you just have to buy/make a couple of shirts/blouses, skirts, pants, etc. to last you a week or two. Some people tend to think that allowing kids to wear what they want to school is the right way to go where human rights are concerned. Most people ignore the financial aspect of it. Just my opinion. :-) |

School uniforms all the way. When yuh going to school you does ask yuhself why yuh cant wear what yuh want, but is only when yuh out ah school yuh does realise that uniforms there for a reason.
* Uniforms are an equalizing factor between the haves and the havenots.
* Teaches you discipline - this is what you have to wear - including white shoes and socks, if you choose to wear something different then be prepared for your punishment.
*and respect - when you wearing your school uniform, you have to respect it, wear it with pride, otherwise you will pay the conquences for your misuse or bad behaviour in it - somebody must see and call the principal.)
* identifys you and the school that you are attending - when it have 1200 -1400 students in a school, uniforms are how you identify who supposed to be on the compound and who not.
* its cheaper on parents - 5 shirts and two skirts / pants and yuh good to go for an entire year. and if yuh lucky two sneakers. as opposed to having to find clothing to wear each day.
* uniforms give a sense of belonging - like juicy said nothing dont make yuh feel pride for yuh school dan to see ah see of people wearing d uniform cheering yuh on.
We wore uniforms until we finished secondary school and we survived! |

In my time we had no choice but to wear a uniform, now that I'm living in a country where there's a choice, I still think that kids need to be wearing uniforms to school, that is why my child will be going to Catholic school where a uniform is mandatory |

Given the choice: I would wear my own clothes!
my school neva had uniforms..only when i was in elementary school and it was okay..but alot of schools they may only allow you to wear skirts..and ah really hate skirts..and the shirts are really HOT sometimes! And them some a dem mek yu buy uniform that cost $60 for the pants(my cousin!) so..it's like..she could only buy one..and what if that mess up..she can't wear anything else, you see?
In my school, i could dress like a bum all I want(lol)..no one give me problems! Mi neva run no popularity contest..i just look like a bum..and most schools uniformed schools won't allow you to look like a bum b/cuz there is certain standard of looks that come along with it! And bcuz mi have freedom to dress how mi want, mi neva business..mi wear the same shirt from last week this week..sue me? Mi wash it so don't judge me(LOL)! So it neva cost mi nothing really!
But it's a bonus for some people..sometimes it's cheaper for those kids who are poorer! The parents will only have to buy ONE or TWO sets of uniform for the year..and dem can wear dat same ting for the rest of the years they are in that school.
BUT, a lot of children DON'T go ANYWHERE besides school..so what other place they have to express themselves thru dressing. In church you have to dress up like this..school ..work! Some parent don't want you fi go a party so? Some parents want yu fi come home right afta school..no hanging out..so?
I tink if the kids stop worrying about what susan or erin saying about how they wear the same ting last week and ting..it would be better for them. but that will never happen..
And I hate seeing schools uniformed. It makes me feel like they are brainless mummies controlled and boxed in! I love colors, vibrancy, life, expression, freedom!
There is ENOUGH rules in the school as it is, why yu want to control the way mi dress too!?
**But i must say that in elementary where I had uniforms..i never noticed anyone for there clothes b/cuz everyone was wearing the same thing..and that was a def. positive. It was my favorite school and best times of my life school..so..hmmm..maybe uniforms helped and i didn't know? I don't know if people wore regular clothes if it would have been the same experience..so..i change mi mind..UNIFORMS for the children! |

I go to a christian school and we are forced to wear these uniforms. they are unisex and make the girls look rediculous. But we put up with it. But wearing uniform for so many years makes you want to wear regular clothes. Especially in Highschool |
