Am I going overboard? |
I am getting married in Jamaica in a few months, and have decided to try to help out by bringing much needed school supplies to a school there. I started out just wanting to bring one suitcase, now it is weighing on me that I could be doing more. I am tempted to post donation boxes at work, and contact a few companies here and ask for donations.
I don't know what the response would be, but I'm afraid I'll get in over my head and not be able to orchestrate this along with the wedding!
Am I going overboard? Should I plan on bringing just one suitcase full? I'm wondering about the logistics of transporting a large amount of supplies on the plane...and the cost.
Thanks for any input! |

I think you should concentrate on the wedding and post the items in a barrel. You are restricted in the amount of luggage and weight you can bring. |

You can bring two bags on the plane. Usually up to 50 lbs each. After that it will cost you. Contact your airlines.
Maybe you should wait till you get there to find out what they really need. |

Don't know what airline your taking, but Steve is right, 50 pounds per check on suitcase with surcharge of $50 over that weight on Air Jamaica. Plus you'll pay duty on all the items inside @ 35% of the value should they look in the case at the airport.
Its commendable that your helping, but to what ends ? Your wedding will be stressful enough. Better you take what you've packed & buy more stuff when your there to give....cause only alternative is to pack a barrel ( which you have to buy ), fill it & ship which cost at least $100, then pay import tax, duty, and transporting the barrel to the school ! |

It's a wonderful thing you're doing and will be much appreciated .Congratulations on your wedding it will be so beautiful in Jamaica. bring the one suitcase with you this time and concentrate on your wedding .you can then get the name and address of the school you want to help and ship any other donated items over later.(i use DHL for this it's a little more reliable and a little less expensive) |

Each passenger can have 2 bags each. For those traveling in the wedding party who plan to only bring one bag, have them carry an extra for you. As well as school supplies, students also need back packs, shoes and uniforms. Check with the resort you are staying at to locate the schools in that area and they can advise you if there is a student who needs item specific supplies. |

Importing some items for donation can be 'weird' because of different customs fees. The best thing is to donate BOOKS. These have no significant duty applied... perhaps 2%.
As far as shipping is concerned, i would recommend calling air jamaica or american airlines and asking for a special discount (on the air cargo charges) based on the size, weight and volume...and the fact that its really a charitable donation. Ship the items at least two weeks ahead of your visit. I also recommend you contact a Jamaicans customs broker to clear the goods from customs for you. They may be willing to hold the items for you until you get here.
This should solve your problem, but understand clearly that MOST people in the steps will want to charge you. You are the one making the real commitment. They probably CANNOT afford to. We ARE in a recession. |
